Default My mate has real anxiety problems and finds it really hard to speak in public

Hi All...

Just found out tonight that one of my housemates has real anxiety problems and finds it real hard to voice his opinions.

I personally have never noticed this as he hides it really well, but i think it would really help if you could give me some pointers on how to help him improve his problems.

He's a really nice bloke and i think if he overcame this he would be very successful.

Any opinions would be appreciated thanks.

Earlier this year I overcame my long-held anxiety around voicing my opinions, and I started a thread about it which (in my opinion ) had some interesting ideas in it. They may not all be applicable to your friend, of course, depending on what the root of his anxiety is.

I don't know, just thinking out loud, maybe if he had a cause which is really worth fighting for he would not be afraid to speak up...

This sounds like it could be social anxiety disorder. As someone experienced with this issue I have one clear piece of advice:

Help him to see a therapist for cognitive behavioural therapy. He may be more reluctant than you'd expect to talk to a professional about this.

Second best (or supplementary) is self help books on the topic:

I recommend Overcoming social anxiety, by Gillian Butler. You can get it on ebook or e-reader for instant download.

Here's a link:
Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness (eBook) by Gillian Butler (2009): Waterstones.com

If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer.

Thanks,

FlabRoshi

He can see a counselor, take speech classes, read self-improvements books, get audio cds on this, hypnosis CDs, there's a lot of material available to him.

Also physically he could exercise (if he doesn't already) which would pump endorphins into his system and have him feeling more confident which could lead to him speaking up more.
