Default The allure of beer pong? (Seriously, wtf?)

So...I was out at the bars with one of my friends last weekend, and he convinced me to play beer pong, a game I despise. However, I kept noticing a bizarre trend--the girls at the bar really, really wanted to play...this wasn't limited to our game, but the other two as well. Is there some sort of weird attraction you guys feel to this frat-tastic game? I couldn't figure it out for the life of me.

On the flip-side, I did get several numbers that night, which is bizarre considering I'm never out to meet girls when I'm at the bars...

Hmm..I don't know, I think beer pong is really stupid lol. Maybe just because I suck at it really bad. Usually when I see a guy who is good at beer pong, and he "fist pumps" every time he makes a cup, I avoid him!

Frat-tastic, hahahaha.

It's kind of a social currency thing. College-aged women gain status by being able to drink like men. I've noticed it in slightly older women too; it tends to carry over in the idea that if you like mixed ("girly") drinks, you are ditzy and unserious, and if you want to be taken seriously you need to drink beer.

Then again, there are few things grosser to me than downing natty lite and waking up all night with the taste of beer in my mouth, so I tend to avoid scenarios where beer pong and keg stands are the focal point of the evening, so I'm commenting on this from the perspective of an outsider.

I think it is just girls wanting to be social. And one of the best ways to be social is to have fun, so they have fun with playing beer pong because that is a game that just about every college party has.

It's a game. It's fun. Easy way to meet people. I don't drink anymore but when I did I had a good time playing beer pong. And no, I wasn't hanging around a frat crowd when I played.

I am either too old or not American enough, but I have no idea whatsoever what beer pong might be.

Hmm...maybe it was our super-basic handshake that tipped 'em off! Regardless, I will most certainly be repeating the practice tonight for St. Patrick's Day...even if I am the worst beer pong player on the planet.

No one plays quarters anymore? My specialty was rolling the quarter off my nose and into the cup.

The version of quarters I played as a kid involved getting the flesh ripped off of your knuckles. You'd clench your fists, put them knuckles down on the table, then the other person (with a certain trick of the hand) would slide the quarters into your knuckles as fast as possible, to cut into them or make them bleed.

As for beer pong, I just say it's just a current trend, and that's pretty much it. Maybe cause it's simple to play and understand, its fun, and it gets you plenty drunk!

Count me in. First I ever heard of it was when my ex told me about a night out down the block, he had played "beer pong". I gathered it was a drinking game of some sort, and made a note not to go to that particular bar LOL.

Flip-cup is way more entertaining and involves less dirt in your beer.

Geez, that doesn't sound like my version of fun. I was just talking about bouncing a quarter off the table into the cup.

Never played it, heard about it first about a year ago from a teenage girl. Alas, my days of beer binging are long over, my stomach has set me a hard 4 drink limit before the inevitable barfs. But apparently it's not as dangerous as "water pong", people have died from that!

Beer pong is a great game,

good competition, good group interaction, and getting drunk fast all in one.

It's such a good drinking game that even when you're not playing it, you feel like high fiving (very american) the people who are playing it..

I never have a party anymore without beer pong. It's a good socially engaging tool. Back in my real heyday we would play something called "caps" that no one seems to play anymore.

Basically, you take bottle caps from beer bottles, save them, have 2 people sit on each side in a team on the floor, fill the cups a quarter of the way up with beer, and then when the opposing team hits, you have to down it.

Girls love it, you get a great buzz quick, and the first team to 10 wins.

I like caps better because it's easier to pair into boy girl and there are nice rules you can make when you hit 3 in a row. For instance, if you hit 3 in a row, you can make a rule that the two partners have to hold hands.

Therefore, one can only shoot right handed, and the other left handed. I would also make a rule that the opposing team (if boy-girl) would have to kiss for every shot they missed.

So, there is more interplay in caps, but Beer Pong isn't so bad either.
