Honestly I think this is something people start exploring when they've had a lot of sex with a lot of different partners, and plain ol' missionary just won't cut it anymore. I don't think sexual depth and maturity *requires* a lot of partners, though there might such a bias in the initial, youthful exploration. I think one can go way deeper with one open-minded, curious, enthusiastic partner than with multiple less open partners. It does take time to develop a more refined sexual palate - just like in any other palate - but the sexual one is one of the last one's to change, I think.

Yeah, I guess I tried more stuff with my last serious boyfriend than the random casual partners. But I don't think I would've done those things if I were a few years younger and less experienced, at the same time.

My understanding is that D/s is so not about whips and chains. I didn't become interested in "whips and chains" until I got comfortable with D/s *psychological* underpinning dynamics. "Whips and chains" are just tools that some people like to enhance that dynamics. One can use low-tech stuff - belts, a solid palm and a tight grip . Don't judge people too harshly about thinking different things about it... There is an entire world of D/s out there, and most of what you see in the vanilla world are indeed the whips and chains.

So, unless you explain to them from the beginning what it is you want, it is not necessarily their fault for misunderstanding you. (and I found that using explanations instead of saying D/s or BDSM or any other technical term works a lot better.

I've had my share of people who I've had to tell about bdsm, and most of the time (actually, all the time) they have WAY different ideas about what it is, then what I like.

And although it is indeed more fun to be with someone who right away understands what you mean and what you want and need, it is not impossible to create that with someone who doesn't initially get it.

I'm pretty stressed (in a good way) and I realize that my posts might not come across as I mean them to be. Too many things going through my head.
