Default Devoting my time for education

I am confused about my personality. I usually stay in home working for university and in my free time I usually spend my time reading articles (Such as the one in this great website), Reading books, writing, translating a book and surfing the internet. I mean that I like spending my time in something useful. A lot of colleagues criticize me for staying at home and concentrating on my Education. I am a junior Engineering Student. My GPA is 3.6.

Is it normal to be like that ?

regards,

Whytem

It is normal if it is normal to you. You should not compare yourself to others because everyone is unique and everyone has a free will.

I'm curious about your definition of useful and also what you colleagues believe you should be doing instead?

Would it matter if it were normal? If so, why would it matter?

Ultimately it has nothing to do with them and everything to do with what you want in your life. When is important to you? Do you feel fulfilled doing what you are doing?

You are the authority in your life. You get decide what is best for you.

Now having said all of that, I use to live a relatively solitary life focused around a few things. I had lived it my whole life. I was satisifed with it. Then, something happened and I started trying different things. There is a whole world out there waiting to be explored. There are experiences you can't even begin to dream of because you are not aware they exist. Now, I can't imagine going back to the life I had.

Don't be afraid to do what you want in life. Also don't be afraid to explore and try something you've never done. You might find yourself surprised about what you had been missing.

Yes, that's normal. You sound as if you like to study. Other people like to go out and party a lot. Some people do a bit of both. As long as you're doing what you love and what you truly want to do, then you're doing the right thing.

Like nhaasch said above, don't be afraid to explore new things either. I've been doing this a lot in the past couple years and it has definitely enriched my life.

That doesn't mean that the other people might not be right therefore, me thinks we should not use the excuse of our being unique as a reason not to learn from others which is not a must also.

Your life your choice!

It sounds like you're doing what you want to be doing, right? Why are your colleagues criticising you? Shouldn't your post be "are my colleagues normal?"

Although maybe you might consider the alternative, going out and partying, and it may be that this is worth trying, and you might try it once and say "why did I bother?" Or you might go out to the party and find that it's the best thing you could have done, and wish you would go out partying more often.

As well, there may be other things you could do with your life, other than partying, which might be really cool.. it's up to you, what you want to do.. Not up to your colleagues whats best for you, and you might find your education gives you a much better future than your colleagues will have. But, I'd also suggest you keep an open mind to life's possibilities.

I thank you all for reply and I am really happy to be answered.
I actually a person who is sometimes ready to hear what ever I people say about me. I think we shall listen what do people say about us to develop our self. I just see that life is not existed for playing. Yes I agree that going out and communicating with people may also be beneficial and may let me learn something. I actually go out and meet people in places where we speech about specific things in life. I will give you an example. One of my friends accused me of being ignorant of places -in our country such as Museum, Societies, Malls- because I do not go out. I actually go out but not a lot. Moreover, I do not have a car. My education is useful because it will guarantee a part of my future. I do not consider going out to a restaurant something useful. I do not consider shopping a lot as a useful thing. They are actually time wasters. I believe that we should spend our life in something beneficial specially in youth.

I think having fun is really important to being a healthy person for me.. So I like listening to music and going to see bands play live at shows. But I really can't be bothered going to clubs that will play dance music of any kind, becasue I don't feel all that connected to the people around me, who like that music. I agree that shopping malls seem to be a waste of time, although I like going to independent CD stores and book stores..

So yeah, in my case, I think it's just a matter of doing what makes you happy.. Some things that are fun for me, are not fun for others, and vice versa.

Einstein said that if success in life is a + b + c then a is work, b is play and c is keeping your mouth shut. Although I think this was just a joke, my point is, that if Einstein said that play is important, I think it is too. lol

I also need to work on doing things that are beneficial to society.. and I'm working on that as well..

I think maybe you'd benefit from finding your own ways to have fun.. but it's your life to live your own way.. It's good you take on feedback from others, can be really useful, but I still think you've got to find whats right for you!
