Default Why do you love to dance?

I'm curious, why do you dance, if you dance regularly? I was told the reason to dance was music. Do you find other reasons more important then music as reasons to dance to?

Wow, what a great question! I love to dance because when I move my body to music, power and joy and freedom surge through every cell in me. It's as if I'm conjuring up the Great Creative Power that initiates volcanic eruptions and the conception of babies.

Also it keeps me regular.

I feel stupid/embarrassed/too silly when I dance.

If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free. I have tried dancing by myself but I cannot shake this sense of stupidity.

It's not the music; it's the movement. The fullness of being really in your body and pushing it to move with music.

Hm, don't know if I can help. I haven't danced in public since high school, and that was a grand total of... three times. I'm not good and I know it. But by myself, I find myself really enjoying a piece of music and wanting to move to it; my main consideration is not to hit the ground too hard because the floor is thin.

Dancing is involves losing yourself in the music and pulling moves out of a hat as they seem appropriate. Don't think about it; the point of dancing is really just to dance, after all. You're not putting on a performance; you're not doing some artsy statement: you're moving and grooving and there's nothing else at the moment to worry about.

BTW, I wasn't really talking about free-style dancing you might see in night clubs. I was talking a more about formal dancing like Tango, Swing dancing, Salsa, etc.

It' great exercise, and it's a hell of a lot more fun than being on a treadmill.

I never thought about why I like to dance. I only really like to let loose to old funk and soul music. I can dance to other stuff, but I get bored with it fast.

Besides, I spent too much time following a friend to gay bars to learn to dance. I may as well keep doing it now

dulaney0330-

What kind of music are you trying to dance to? If it requires a partner and you are dancing by yourself, yeah, that would look a little odd

If it's not, just go out there and shake yer thang! I'm sure I looked like a jackass for a long time before I knew what the hell I was doing. It doesn't matter. People go dance to have a good time. No one will care what you are doing. Just shake it.

Oh yeah, if any of you live in the LA area (NOT lower Alabama) and love to shake it, lemme know. I'm always looking for an excuse to cut some rug

I didn't even answer the question, hu?

It's one of those ineffable, primeval phenomenon and words can't really do it justice. You just do it and like it. Almost "reasons" are post hoc explanations.

I love dancing, but I generally do it by myself when I'm just rocking out to music. I'm very embarrassed about dancing in public, though, unless I'm really drunk, since my dancing tends to be like this, but much less awesome. As for why I enjoy it, I have no idea: the science behind music is a mystery to me.

That's the way to do it. When I dance I like to dance for my own enjoyment, not because I'm trying to look cool for other people :P

And that link was awesome, RT.

club dancing? i can't club dance I feel quite silly and dorky.

but I'm always doing grandebattements and arabesques and plies and assembles in my kitchen. just for kicks, i have extra energy and i get a good giggle out of spontanously moving in such abstract ways.

sometimes i let out my inner groove child first thing in the morning if a good song comes on the radio (think heidi klums guitar hero commercial - youtube it)

yeah its a good alternative to screaming if your fustrated or really happy.

i think those are the same reasons for whale breaching too. expression of sheer glee..

First of all, music (not all music, but a lot) makes me move, might just be tapping a finger, or moving my whole body.

Have done a lot of partner dancing; ballroom, salsa, argentine tango, and more, and for me it's great way of connecting with people, sometimes have trouble opening up verbally, physically is easier for me, and dancing is a wonderful positive way of doing that.
Two people getting together and creating movement, synchronizing with each other. A trinity of the music, your partner and you.

Incidentally, I strongly recommend Daniel Levitin's books on neuroscience and music.

I love club dancing! I really let myself go on the dancefloor!

Put your hands in the air everyone. It makes me feel great. I become the music.

I think the tango is really sexy, mainly coz I like the shoes , never learned to do it though.

I love to dance...ballroom, hustle, salsa, west coast swing. Love the connection with a partner, the social aspect (endless variety ), the rhythm, the emotional expression...being in the moment...and just the joy of *movement*.

Am on my way to dance now, in fact.
