Default What is this child to me?

Hello there.

A couple of weeks ago a baby was born, my father's second son. This child is not from my mother, but from my father's new wife (my mom and dad separated many years ago when I was just a little boy). I have somewhat mixed feelings about this that I don't really understand myself, but that's a whole different issue.

I have been wondering, what is that child to me? Is he like a little brother, or a cousin?

He's your half-brother.

He's your father. This post will make sense once time travel becomes ubiquitous in 20 years.

Unfortunately, it will not. If the half-brother would be JMonotoenoe's father, it would mean that they are one and the same person. Dad would be his own dad. Time paradoxes aside, that's genetically impossible. There is no way for dad to impregnate a woman in such a way that the child's DNA would be identical to dad's DNA. Not unless dad is also the woman being impregnated (and even then the chance of egg and sperm having DNA split in exactly the right way for all 22 chromosomes to recombine to form exactly dad's DNA is only 0.5 to the 22nd power or 0.00000023841579).

All in all, I don't think JMonotoenoe will have to worry about some day calling his little brother dad. Even if time travel becomes absolutely ubiquitous.

A more likely thing to be worried about would be winning the jackpot in a lottery with a ticket found in the street.

Yup, it's your half-brother indeed. I imagine it's strange to have a sibling who's so much younger. I have a half-brother and a half-sister whom I almost don't know (I met them once), I've always found it strange to know they exist and are my siblings.

I agree he is your half brother. On looking at Erin's site, do children choose their parent siblings etc may help see another light. I realise not all would agree but I do and found it rather touching my son is a half brother to his sister and definitly they have a pact together. So congratulations on been a big brother! half or not a BIG BROTHER! that's pretty awesome.
