I couldn't think of any other place to put this--theres no pets section here--but we recently got a german shepherd puppy that loves to chew--on all things--our FEET. so we get this idea to use bitter spray--we buy a bottle of it at the store and put it on our feet thinking this will do the trick--NOT!! He slurps it up as if it was water!!! Anyone else have a strange story like this and would be willing to share advice on how NOT to get him to chew/gnaw on things? (we gave him chew toys, and rawhides, etc. but he likes to put his mouthful of needles on our feet!!!...maybe he likes the smell or taste--) any advice would be appreciated! |

We went through this with our pup - it required patience! And consistency - EVERY time he nipped our feet, I would pull him back by his scruff and say NO, really loudly. He grew out of it eventually! It helped to think that he probably just saw my boys as really big puppies. He was more than likely wondering why they didn't bite him back! |

We used to curl our pup's lips in between her teeth so she bites herself when this happens. It worked. I don't know if she actually made the connection between biting and "wow, my teeth are sharp, I shouldn't bite people;" that's pretty anthropomorphic. Most likely she just started to associate chewing with the pain she felt as "ouch" and stopped doing it to avoid the ouch factor. Another thing that worked with my previous dog is making a shrieking sound like a wounded puppy. This is what happens when a puppy bites one of its littermates too hard - the bitee cries "Yipe!" and the biter stops. Or alternately the bitee bites back. I have had friends that bit their pup's the ear - and found it to work really well. Nobody wants to be cruel to inflicting pain on their pets. However, I think it is important to consider how dog relate to one another in a a pack. A little nip on the ear is just what puppy's mom or alpha dog would do if the puppy bit her. Have you read the books by the Monk's of New Skete? They are the best around. Incidentally, did you spray your feet with bitter spray? That's just really funny. BTW, I think it would be fun to have a pets section on a personal development forum! |

Your dog is (1)possibly teething (2) in need of training and/or (3) just plain bored and needs something to do. How much exercise does he get a day? Do you walk him at least once a day, a nice energetic walk? Do you give him something more interesting to play with? |
