Here's a quick question. My Father currently doesn't have cable, just the 4 basic channels, but he's been considering getting DishNet lately. Partially because he wants sports, partially because he wants Fox news. Now, I'm not a big fan of TV, I think that it's effect on a home is a net negative, in a BIG way. So I told my Father about the Apple - Apple TV which, if you read about it, is where media is going. One of my favorite features of the device is that it lets you watch video podcasts on your TV, which much higher quality than the depressing programs on TV today. I'm not entirely sure why I'm posting about this here since there doesn't appear to be any solution. I doubt he's going to wise up and start getting his news from multiple sources anytime soon, and there's no replacement for live baseball. I guess I just wondered if there's any solution I'm not thinking of for preventing my father's house from turning into Fox News central like his father before him. Sorry if I'm being a downer on this forum. |

I forgot to articulate that, I dislike all news channels, but fox news seems to be the most sensationalistic. I guess this topic could be called, "how do I wean someone off of network television propaganda... i mean, news. I know I can't change a person, so I'm asking for ideas to help sway someone in a better direction. |

So, how do I help sway someone away from more TV watching? I suppose the best strategy would be positive encouragement toward it's opposite... but how would that work. How have ya'll delt with family members about to buy cable/satellite packages you know will NOT improve their state of mind? |

For them to not watch TV would require at the least knowing something more useful to do with their time that they want to do. TV has a certain value, lets say = enjoyment / required effort You would have to beat that value with something else. It is hard to reduce someones enjoyment of TV without them changing internally. You know how well telling kids that they are being lazy works |
