Default What's the best conversation-starting phrase for school?

I'm currently going to college and am usually fairly outgoing, especially with people I know. Once I start talking I'm fine. I just don't know of a REALLY good way to open a conversation while I'm waiting for class to start. Everyone usually just looks like they don't care. I'm sure many of them would like to have a conversation because I've tried it already. It's not a matter of being shy; I just would like to know what everyone's favorite way to start an engaging conversation is (particularly at school).

My favorite is: "Hello, my name is Angela; what's yours?" I use it all the time.

If they are anything like me it's not that they don't care they are probably just tired or stressed!

At school I would ask people's names, introduce myself. I would ask about what classes they were taking. If you have a test coming up ask them if they feel prepared. These little questions aren't so revealing in and of themselves, but they get the ball rolling.

I also always had extra pens and pencils so that when someone came in without a writing instrument I could lend them one and strike up conversation that way.

It's not so hard really. I am even fairly quiet and shy and I ended up talking to lots of different people in school! Just be open and approachable and be interested in what people have to say. Even if you only say a few words to each other one day it builds the foundation to talk more at another time.

*Big Grin and Dominant* Hey! Who are you?

And watch as they open up because you showed interest and now they want to demonstrate their best side to you.

Hi!

This reminds of college times... Here's what my kid does, and it works great for him.

Just ask a classmate what the next session will be, and if he/she has already got all the books for tha particular class. And take it from there

Good luck!

-Tom
