Default Eye problem, or..?

Hello,

I'm a new member here and this is my first post. It's nice to meet all of you.

There is a certain "problem" I have had with my eyes for many years (I'm 17 now) and up until now I have ignored it because it never harmed me. It only occured to me recently that it could be something serious and I should check it out. Basically, I see little specks of grey and what appear to be faint curvy lines sometimes moving about, as if they were floating around me. I never see them in the dark, only in areas where there is light. I remember I was very scared the first time I noticed them, but they never did anything to me so I gradually just accepted that they were there. Now I can't remember them ever NOT being there.

So, my question is: does anyone recognize these as symptoms for some kind of eye problem, or maybe this is something completely normal and I'm just not aware that other people see this stuff too, or...I don't know...is it something more? I didn't want to immediately say they are ghosts or spirits or whatever because that thought sort of scares me... So I am considering the possiblity of it being some eye problem. Oh, and I am near-sighted and wear glasses, if that helps in any way.

I was a bit hesitant to ask this at first because it sounds kind of ridiculous, but I'm being serious. If this sounds too vague then please tell me what to elaborate on and I will. Any responses are appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Nani, those sound like floaters, which are normal and harmless. This Wikipedia entry has more information on them:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floater

If you have any more questions, you may want to see an eye doctor.

Oh, that's EXACTLY it! Whew...I feel so relieved now. I just found out my brother has it too! I thought something was seriously wrong with me and I was too afraid to speak up about it all this time. How silly of me!

Thank you so much!!

I would advise you to see an ophthalmologist (not an optometrist) immediately.

... why? Floaters are fairly common - unless it suddenly came on via a head injury or eye disease or keeps getting progressively worse and worse, it's not really a sign of anything bad. I have the same thing that he has, and nothing has ever been wrong with my eyes (I'm only super, super, super slightly nearsighted/farsighted [one of them!] but it's not enough for glasses, by far).

Yeah, it sounds like floaters to me, but I think everyone should also see an eye doctor if they have the money, just to make sure your eyes are staying healthy.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Shamou!

I'm a person who spends too much time at the computer or in front of the TV playing video games, so I know my eyes are not exactly healthy. I've decided to significantly lessen my time at the computer and TV so that I can try and improve my eyesight using methods like palming. I don't know if they work or not but it won't hurt to try. I heard wearing glasses slows down the improvement. Unfortunately I can't completely discard those. I imagine this will take a very long time...years, probably (or never, if eyesight cannot improve naturally). Wish me luck!

The Bates Method is good. I think reducing eye strain is the best way to go. Using affirmations may also help. Wish you all the best.

Lol, I have this thing too.

Actually, I never thought it was an unusual thing because I supposed it was a normal thing for everyone. Go figure; you're always learning.
