There's a party going on...
I'd like to share an experience that has been with me since I was about 8 years of age. First of all, let me state that I am a grown woman, I have two Masters degrees, I have never experienced any sort of psychological disturbance, nor am I currently being prescribed any medications. Every night just as I am physically relaxed and being lulled into sleep, I hear voices... Many voices, as if I am a spectator at a large social event. These voices, though audible, are not discernable. And there is background noise, like the clanging of dishes, or maybe they're bells or chimes. I'm not sure. It's difficult to describe. It almost sounds like a very busy restaurant... Lots of chatter, laughing and clanging of dishes. I don't feel threatened by this, as I said before, my earliest recollection of this experience was at the age of 8. But I am now nearly 40 years old, and I never fall asleep without hearing the party going on. Why is this happening? And I wonder if anyone else out there can relate to my experiences?

Sometimes when I am falling asleep, I think I hear music. If I wonder what it is and wake myself up, it will turn out to be a fan or something rythmic, and my sleepy brain superimposes a melody over that. That's the closest thing I've got.

Hypnogogic imagery? It isn't limited to images. I get that a lot, too, when I let my mind rest. It isn't "internal chatter" because it's not me doing the thinking, but it's not harmful chatter and it's not getting in the way of my sleeping, so I took it as normal.

Just before we get to sleep is a time when our brains our operating very hard because the environment is very different opposed to that of the day. As I think of it our brain has been gaining speed all day and suddenly you stop. This is when the brain inertia comes in and what we experience can be different for every person but similar - very fast thinking about many different things. For me that's sometimes exhausting but sometimes very interesting and pleasant.

Sounds a lot like the symptoms Robert Bruce mentions about astral projection. He often talks about people hearing and seeing things around them with their eyes closed and attributes it as an effect of both a deeply relaxed state + the possibility of projecting.
