Gemstone question

I'm a newbie when it comes to gemstones and crystals, but I've had my eye on them for a while. I stumbled upon a new age shop and invested in a black obsidian gemstone (I was going for a crystal... no idea how I wound up with a gemstone.)

What I'd like to know is, does wearing a gemstone create longer term benefits, or are the energies available only when it is worn?

Also, are there vast differences between a crystal and a gemstone of the same type?

The differance between a crystal and a gemstone of the same type is that the crystal is the natural form in what it was found, it becomes a gemstone when it is polished and used in jewelry.

Crystals can be kept in a pocket, placed in a room, or worn, if you need them for healing keeping it next to your skin is best.

They can be used for balancing and cleansing the chakras, as part of a magic spell and for rcyring

Thanks for the straight answer and information. So in other words, gemstones are pretty much the same but crystals are more powerful?

I meant scrying.

When you buy a new crystal it will have the energies of people who have previously handled it, so it would be best to cleanse a crystal.

To cleanse a crystal place it in a bowl of water overnight, make sure it is in a position where the moon will cast a reflection on the water.

From my experiance crystals are more powerful than gemstones.

Of course...I AM wearing the gemstone and intend to keep on wearing it.

There are different properties to crystals and gemstones. It is known that chrystals store information and energy. There are many different ways to cleanse them...as newsight said, they pick up the energies of those who have handled them. The cleansing technique I use to cleanse my crystals is to place them fully surrounded by seas salt...itself a crystal...and let it sit for 7 days. It has been advised to set them out in the light of a full moon, as they will absorb the Full Moon energy, thus increasing their power. Three days prior to and three days after the full moon are all good times for this.

As I'm NOT an expert on gemstones, I can't offer any other advice, though newsight makes me realise I need to cleanse the stones I keep by my desk. Some Feng Shui practicioners will recommend certain stones and crystals by the desk, and others caution you to avoid this. Each recommendation from each expert is contingent on what best resonates with you.

Pineal gland interaction with some crystals can be good, and a powerful experience. It is suggested you start out slowly with any new venture, and be discerning with any recommendations.

There are differences in gemstones and crystals, everybody is different by the way they garner benefits from them. So wear them as much as possible and do pay attention to the most subtle things that happen to you. When you wear the black obsidian pay attention to any feelings of having more energy or being connected to the earth. All black stones have a grounding quality to them, but sometimes it's very hard to notice, you do have to watch youserlf carefully.

Also, do searches on the stone you're wearing to make sure you know what might happen to you as you wear it. I would also put it under your pillow at night when you sleep, how stones can benefit you are sometimes more noticable when you're sleeping.

The miss at the shop had also suggested that they be let out to absorb the full moon's energies...and I love the sound of that.

About the energies being subtle...I can't relate! It's only been hours and there is a strong difference without a doubt. I suppose it depends on the type of crystal/gemstone, since this one in particular is known to be strong and fast-acting.

They aren't expensive at all and yet hold much power. I'm impressed...

There are many ways to cleanse your crystals, sea salt is okay for the ones such as quartz and my guess is that obsidian would be fine being cleansed like this, since it is a gem silica (in other words, a variation of quartz!). But be careful if you ever use a softer crystal, some that have a very low hardness on the moh's scale with not tolerate much, so for those sage is better. I can expand on cleansing methods if you'd like.

Now for the "power" of the crystal, I do find raw crystals really good, but polished one will work as well if you use them well. They still have an energy. I did put reiki in a labradorite I was about to send to someone and it pumped as much as it could.

If you chose an obsidian eventually, it means this is the one that will help you best at this time. Crystals do this .

I used to have a desert rose and if i had have put that in salt water it would have fallen to bits within an hour.

When you feel no energy coming from a crystal that has been cleansed then place the crystal in direct sunlight during the day, this should charge it full of renewed energy.

Oh yes, desert rose is a type of selenite, and selenite is like a 2.5 hardness (if memory serves well here). Extremely friable, won' t take salt or water.

I guess I would say it's kind of like exercise. It's strongest while doing it (wearing it), but the effects last a while after.

I cleanse my with salt and then I also sit them on the window sills in the moonlight.


My husband got me a set of Charkra stones, I put them under my mattress in position. I've noticed a big difference in being able to get messages while sleeping.

My current house is very difficult to get messages in (it sits on clay).
