Out of the 2 choices I would go with the neighbor's emotions.

But it could very well be that it's your own emotions in response.

I think it's kind of like a sliding scale with the strength of drugs. Feeding off sorrow/sadness/depression would be like experimenting with marijuana. Causing something as extreme as outright hatred or raging anger for the purposes of farming that particular emotion would be equivalent to injecting heroin. The later is more powerful, but it also requires a serious negative-addict to subscribe to its potency.
