heard a voice - help?

There were two similar incidents that happened a long time ago (within the last seven years, and there was a huge gap in between) which freaked me out. This is actually my first time talking about this because I'd been worried people might think I was crazy (well, maybe I really am, who knows ).

The first time was when I was walking around in a mall; the second time, I was standing on a plane aisle waiting for the doors to open. I heard a voice call me, as clearly as if the person was standing next to me. What disturbed me was that it was the voice of a person I still have a lot of issues with today - we met around seventh grade; we started out as friends but then she turned out to be a scary green-eyed monster who became jealous of another friend and me, not that I'm tooting my own horn. What made it scary? She was practically stalking this friend of mine, in her own subtle way. This was in high school. The last I saw of her was in university (we went to the same one), where we would have outwardly friendly conversations when we passed by each other.

This voice called me by a nickname this person would have used. These two incidents happened around the time I was in university too.

What happened?

I've read reports of people hearing their name called, by their guides, angels or perhaps someone who has passed over. I have a friend, who hear's her name called out to her at her home from time to time.... she says she thinks it's either her angels or perhaps nature spirits (fairies). It's a very common way for them to get your attention.

Possibly a touch of schizophrenia. It's normal and common for many people
particularly after a major life change such as going to a new school.

Nothing to worry about if it's only once in awhile.
Exercise, meditation, or anything that is relaxing can help.

I had a touch after I moved to NYC.

Why would nature spirits want to get your attention? And what would they achieve by just calling your name (why not say something else, for example?)? And these happened in a shopping mall and in another country (I was having a family vacation)...are nature spirits even in places as public as these? Why use the same voice (and the voice of a person I don't like, to boot)?

Sorry for the questions. I'm new to this stuff.

re sorter: I didn't find college really stressful (if anything, I was a colossal bum and barely sailed through with mediocre grades...) except for big projects and exams of course, but the times when the weirdness happened wasn't anywhere near those. The first time was either on a lazy weekend or a school holiday, and the second time was in summer where my family went abroad (I was in another country when that happened).

It's not the kind of stress you would necessarily notice but it is stress.
New environments tax your senses. Acclimation is stressful.
I was happy, excited, and trying to take in as much of NYC as I could at first.
I didn't feel stressed but I was.

Don't worry about it. This is not symptomatic of a psychological disturbance. How many people claim to have seen ghosts, to have heard voices, to have been visited by Aliens, to have "spoken" to God, and so on....? Nearly everyone!
Our minds are not perfectly operational, as a previous poster said, people can undergo very temporary and minor alterations of perception every now and then, and still function completely well in their lives.

Although I would stay away from consistent drug use, particularly psychedelics like Cannabis

You could be clairaudient, that could be another reason for hearing your name being called. Clairaudients get frequent psychic messages through hearing them. And as far as angels and fairies and so forth....I'm not trying to scare anyone, these beings exist here with us and wish to be our friends, from time to time, they call out to us, out of love and friendship. Also, if you did receive a call from them (I can't be sure it was them)....it can also help you become more aware. These times we're going through are absolutely perfect for increasing awareness and become "more" of ourselves. Meeting the other beings that occupy this world with us... can be a very enlightening experience.

I'm not trying to frighten anyone, I only brought up angels and fairies trying to help. This world is not a fricked-up place, but if you see it that way... the Law of Attraction (LOA) will bring a world like that to you, we really do get what we focus on.

Maybe -just maybe, what you heard is what's happening. Maybe the girl concerned was thinking intently of you at those moments...? We often do think of people who are in our lives, or those who have moved away in our lives. Who doesn't?
If this girl had an intense, slightly obsessive, personality, then it's possible her thinking could be very 'charged' with intensity or feeling. If you are in any way sensitive, you could well pick that up.

We'd think it came from whatever we were looking at.

I'm agnostic about the channeling idea.
And I wouldn't want to say I believe other beings are talking through me for fear of being diagnosed with schizophrenia.

One time in high school, our teacher had us read minds - we were paired off, and were supposed to picture the house our partner was thinking of. I did very poorly there, though that crazy stalker girl said she did well.

But my sister was able to see our dead grandmother some time after she died.

Is that how telepathy works (and how does it work, anyway? Is it possible for you to stalk someone through telepathy? Read their minds like a book?)?

Schizophrenia is a very serious, chronic, debilitating mental illness that causes delusions, Hallucinations, thought and movement disorders, paranoia, depression, and a list of many other serious symptoms. Schizophrenia can be passed along by a genetics, infections during pregnancy, (and cause the child to have it) And extremely difficult life circumstances during childhood, like the early loss of a parent, parental poverty, bullying, witnessing parental violence; emotional, sexual, or physical abuse; physical or emotional neglect. Nobody has "a touch" of Schizophrenia; It is not like a cold, hay fever, or anxiety, where you have it for a little while and then it goes away on its own~ It is a serious illness that effects something like 1% of the population and takes years of psychological therapy and medication to control and treat it. Rest assure, nothingyouwanttoknow, if you have heard a voice call out to you a couple of times throughout your life, chances are you do not have this condition. Perhaps it is a spirit guide trying to get your attention, maybe you are supposed to get a hold of her? Or maybe it was a memory you were subconsciously thinking about, and it caused you to hear her name? Hope this helps some. Manda

It's presumed that schizophrenia is inherited since it frequently runs in the family.

Schizophrenia and psychosis in general exists on a continuum. It's not all or nothing.
Anyone who experiences enough stress will start showing symptoms of psychosis.
Many adults who don't have a disposition for clinical psychosis experience mild symptoms during stressful periods of their life.
By mild I mean short lived. I doubt anyone would describe psychotic symptoms as mild in terms of intensity. They can be very frightening.

I don't have any psychic sensitivities at all (I did poorly in a "mind-reading" activity our teacher made us do in high school, though that stalker girl said she did well), so I don't know what could have made me "hear" a spirit guide, if it indeed was that, and only for those two times. I've never had anything else like that since.

Thanks for reassuring me I don't have a touch of schizophrenia.

I've been recently trying to figure this out: maybe she was thinking of me (though why she would scares me), like what bluestar said? Maybe trying to call out to me, trying to establish a telepathic connection? Though why I would be able to pick that up given my lack of psychic powers escapes me.

How does telepathy work, anyway? I'd previously understood it to be essentially talking to someone with your thoughts, but I'm the average person with barely any knowledge of ESP. Is it possible she was, I don't know, trying to read my mind or something, or doing a "test-drive"? (She DID say she did well in that mind-reading exercise we did in high school.) Forgive me for sounding paranoid, but from what I know of this person, if there was some way to read minds, she would have done that long ago.
