Default Does It Mean I Can't Be Hypnotized?

When I listen to hypnosis recordings I never seem to go into any different state than my normal. I either just listen normally to the sound and voice or, more often, fall asleep.

The voice on the recording will do a number count to bring the listener back to "normal awareness" but if I'm asleep I just stay asleep. If I'm not asleep, I'm definitely already in my normal state the whole time, and could just open my eyes and walk away like always. So I don't think I'm ever under hypnosis.

Anyone have this problem or suggestions?

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. Rather than thinking about the level of trance you are in, I'd look to see if the hypnosis is helping you get the results you want.

You could be falling asleep and not waking up when prompted because you are very tired. Do you think you have a sleep debt to pay off?

Have you ever missed a freeway turnoff because you were caught up in your thoughts?

Have you ever been in a conversation and suddenly noticed that hours had gone by, when it felt like it had been minutes? Or a massage, or an other situation where time surprises you?

Have you ever laid around daydreaming, and really gotten into it?

Have you ever been so wrapped up in a movie that you jumped when the phone rings, either on screen or in your room? Have you ever been moved to tears by a film?

If you say yes to any of these, it means you can be hypnotized, because you were hypnotized. That's what the state of hypnosis feels like.

I've been hypnotized by looking at someone I love and just smiling, not saying anything and just enjoying each other (online). We can 'feel' each other and when we are being here in the present, time just flies. I looked up and it was an hour and it didn't feel that long.

It's wonderful.

Yeah, that's a nice trance. There are other kinds of trances, too -- like when you get all up in your head about something that someone said or did, really intently listening to your internal voice about it. Then sometimes later you find out you were feeling all stressed about something that wasn't even real. That's hypnosis, too.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.
I am not experiencing any results, at least that I can notice. Sometimes I listen after quite a bit of rest and still may fall asleep, so it's not just when I am sleep deprived that it happens.

I've experienced the random trance states like while driving or daydreaming, but it's just not happening when deliberately induced.

It could be fear, but you have to just let that go. The first time I listen to any hypnosis tape I fear going into it because of what they may say, I may not agree with it. So after that I am ok, but also not all hypnosis is made the same. I highly recommend the apps for iPod by Andrew Johnson, if you have a device to download them on. Also, I believe in falling asleep you still get the message to your subconscious.

Oh yeah, are you changing them up daily? If so don't. Listen to each for a few weeks at a time.

Well Mud, I am not aware of any fear, so maybe if so it would be subconscious fear. Ok that last part was sort of redundant. ha! Good point about sticking with the same.

ANOTHER THING: What's up with the ones where you are guided to meet some person or guide or being and they give you a message? Nothing seems to come either by normal sense modes or vague impressions of anything. I have never noticed any message and I feel like I am missing out. I would like to make use of these because I'm sure I could benefit from a message from guides or even my subconscious, but so far no luck.

How long have you been using hypnosis? Sometimes the results are very subtle that you didn't notice it until someone points out the change in you.

Also, you seem like expecting something to happen during a trance. Let that go and don't over-analyze things. The reason sometimes you naturally go into trance when watching tv, is because you didn't expect anything. Let the mind do what it wants, don't try to control it.

Like Holistic Star pointed out, everyone experience hypnosis differently. So it doesn't mean you must feel like you're floating or things like that.
