Default Empathic vs. Clairsentient

Hi

I'm trying to distinguish between being empathic and being clairsentient. Is it pretty much the same experience or are there fine points to consider?

I'm hoping that some established psychic practitioners will chime in here with your thoughts....Erin, Alex, Anna..? And anyone who has a point of view/experience to share?

I am still very new to this, but posess both empathic and clairsentient abilities; as well as a few others that are a little less defined in me. They are diffrent; and I tend to trust my empathic sences better-but those I can explaine better. The clairsentient; I have been "testing" for example I passed my father-in-laws new girlfriend whom I had never talked to or met in the bathroom and made a note that I knew this was her. I went into the bathroom at the resturant and my father-in-law wasn't at the reasturant yet I came out there was my father-in-law with the rest of the family...minus his friend. I was right when she was introduced to me when she got back. She also looked the way I procieved her to look and I am not sure what gift that would be atributed to. Basicly the way I understand it empathy deals with understanding others emotions; I also can feel physical pain from others. The Clairsentient is more of a knowing things that you aren't sure how you know them. I am not able to do so now, but tomorrow I will look up a link I found that explains it better. Hope that helps some for now.

Well I wouldn't get too hung up on terms, as different people will use the same terms and mean different things, but psychic empathy is sensing the emotional state of another, whereas clairsentience is the extra sensory perception of something, translated in such a way that it would be recognizable to one of your 5 physical senses. For example, clairvoyance is seeing at a distance. Clairaudience is hearing something psychically at a distance. These are both forms of clairsentience.

Again, don't get too hung up on the terms. The thing of import is that information can come to your consciousness in a myriad of ways, not just the 5 physical channels we are accustomed to. And all these different labels for different psychisms are really just translations of a more fundamental energy of knowing-ness -- raw intuition, or "clear light" -- the stuff of consciousness and intelligence.

Empathy is the ability to directly experience the physical or emotional sensations of others.

Clairsentience is a form of receiving information from outside yourself in the form of emotions or feelings. e.g. Asking your guides a question about an intention you want to achieve and receiving the answer in the form of an emotion or physical sensation.

So for example when I was dating if I got a certain sensation in my back when I met someone (clairsentience) I wouldn't take it any further - because my experience was that that sensation means that person isn't a good match for me, however nice they seem. It wasn't their emotions I was picking up on, it was information that was useful to me.

On the other hand, when I am working with clients I often will directly experience their emotions in my own body (empathy) even when I am working over the phone and I use that information to help guide the session.

The sensations might be the similar, but the source and information received and what you do with it might be different.

With clairsentience you will feel things inside your body that you're picking up from other people including deceased people. You will feel nervous inside your own body, you will feel pain inside your own body. You'll feel like you are choking if the deceased person was choking, etc.

With empathy you know what people are feeling and thinking without feeling it yourself. You know it, you don't have to actually feel it.

Often people who are empathic are also clairsentient. And often people who are empathic will carry other poeple's energy unnecessarily.

Thanks for your posts everybody.

I am trying to get a handle on this stuff w/o getting stuck on terms.

I am emotionally empathic, I believe. I definitely tune into and carry the energy of others--and unnecessarily, as you mentioned, Erin....I'm just now attempting to re-frame my understanding of my life experiences as those of an empath and am having many, many "aha" moments.

I DO feel the emotions of others, so Erin, I am still a little confused. I *know* the emotions of others b/c I feel them within myself. It isn't like there's the distance of simply knowing what they are. That would be nice!

I just came from a visit with my sister and her family and it was so chaotic and stressful and I soaked it all up and became overwhelmed and then ate compulsively to try to buffer myself.Seeing myself as an empath now, it was so easy to see what I was doing! I felt like I had two choices--run out the front door or leave my body by mindless eating. Not good. But I'm on a learning curve here with myself...

So, clairsentient might be something like having a physical sensation in my body when a spirit was near me or trying to communicate, as opposed to "hearing" or "seeing." Or feeling a cold pocket in a room or the shivers upon meeting someone...? And clairsentient is not really related to picking up on the emotions of another, per se. Right?
