How do we know we have spirit guides?

Hi,

I've been struggling a lot lately about what I truly believe. I'm Catholic, and I still hang onto a lot of those beliefs, but I've also been a lot more open to adopt other beliefs as well.

Something I've been having trouble with is the concept of spirit guides. How do we know we have them? Who first discovered that we have spirit guides? I know there are similar concepts, like guardian angels, but what is the difference, if any? For instance I've seen Catholics who fully adopt the idea of guardian angels, and even try to talk to them, but condemn the idea of spirit guides. But I don't know why, or what the difference is.

Something a lot of Catholics would ask is, how do you know your spirit guide isn't trying to deceive you? That is one of the reasons I fear adopting such a belief. What if you think it is a spirit guide, but it is really some negative entity, even a demon? How can you ensure you are communicating with the correct entity?

I've been a lot more open to intuition, and mine has been developing really well. But I'm still having trouble with this concept of spirit guides.

Have you read Erin's blog article explaining the difference between Angels and Spirit Guides? It's good stuff.

Spirit Guides, Guardian Angels, and Archangels Defined

How do you know you're communicating with Spirit Guides and not some other negative entity? I've seen this answered on many blogs, and basically you'll know from how the info received feels to you. Both Spirit Guides and Angels have our best interests at heart and give info from a non-judgemental place of love. They want to help us and want us to live fuller and happier lives.

If you raise your vibration before attempting communication, you'll be protected from the negative entities anyway. As a Catholic (and I know where you're coming from), you're more comfortable with the concept of Angels. So ask your Angels to send you signs/synchronicities about whether your Guides are real or not. Ask them to help you discover the best way to communicate with them. Ask your Angels to protect you from any and all negative associations during Spirit Guide communications and they will certainly help you.

I think people who are gifted with being able to communicate very easily with Spirit Guides, Angels, and other beings have all gone through a period in their intuitive/spiritual development where they have encountered negative entities. They definitely know the difference and can tell us less naturally gifted people how to avoid them. That's why I take the advice of people like Erin so seriously when they say it's important to raise your vibration before communicating with Guides.

Thanks for your reply, JoePike. I think I have read that post before, but it is good to reread it. I will try what you suggest, and hopefully that will help.

How do we know we have spirit guides?

Here's one way to know.. :)

Ask yourself why you eye's just flicked to looking at the time "11:11" or that license plate or whatever when it did...

Ask yourself why you looked just then..? :D

That's your guides.. that's a instruction from above a signal from those watching.. to ohh your "synchronicity" is waiting :)

OK, so I tried to meditate and to meet one of my spirit guides. I used one of the methods I think I've seen Erin talk about, about climbing stairs up to some personal room, and meeting the guide there.

I tried this, and then a spirit guide, presumably, came through another door. I heard him greet me. The funny thing was that this guide really reminded me of someone I used to know in real life. I still see him from time to time, but not nearly as much anymore, so it was strange that this guide reminded me of him. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I'm not sure whether I really met a guide or whether it was just my imagination. But it was just weird that he would remind me so strongly of that person, since I've not thought about him for a long time. It was just the personality that came through, being very cheerful and such.

Not as far as I know. I just saw him a few months ago, but I only occasionally run into him by chance.

I'm not saying that this spirit was him, just that he really reminded me of him. I'm not sure what to make of it, or if it was real.

It was real.. validate your experience.. you can't get to the point of "knowing yourself or your guides" without that validation :)

Thanks. What do you mean by validating my experience, though?

Validation means you move your experience from a "well, maybe" "I'm not sure" to ahh.. "yah, something happened" "I had a experience " "I validate my experience"

I validate that I made a connection through this experience I tried..

It is telling yourself a truth.. that the imagination is not FICTION.. but a real experience..

If all of us were validating our imaginations.. we might begin to live our dreams more.. then make them hypothetical's :D :p

Thanks for your reply. You are right it is hard to trust what I am feeling or thinking all the time. I am still new to this. It did seem real though, since there's no reason I would have thought of that person.

Thanks for your help.
