I’ve been looking for information on Reiki. I’m particularly interested in personal experiences, as the theoretical side it pretty easy to find online. I’ve never received a Reiki-treatment so maybe I should just start with that. But I would like to know what to expect from it. Do you feel something when you are receiving the treatment? And after? I’ve been googling it and found out you have to be “attuned” before you can use it on yourself (or others). I’ve read you can’t get attuned from just reading about it, someone has to attune you... How does that work? There is a lady, not too far from where I live who teaches Reiki. What can I expect from a Reiki I-course? Do you feel a difference after you’ve been attuned? Is it really something everybody can do? All info is welcome! |

Because everyone is experiences energy-work very differently, it's hard to generalize what people feel during a Reiki session. This is also made more difficult with Reiki as Reiki is intelligent and self-adaptive; the amount that is needed goes to where it's needed during a session. What that means is that everyone experiences Reiki differently person-to-person as well as session-to-session. And it's the same for the practitioner. Some sessions (where I was receiving Reiki from another) have been very calm and relaxing and I've even fallen asleep, while other sessions (from the same practitioner) I've been very aware of the energy flows through my body and have experienced them in a number of different ways. That being said, Reiki is one of the least "invasive" healing techniques I've experienced or am aware of. As you know, the recipient is fully (comfortably) clothed and direct physical contact between the recipient and practitioner is not necessary. I would definitely suggest you start with a Reiki session (or more, if you like) to see how you experience it before deciding about taking classes. Reiki has developed several different branches which have different styles of teaching and Reiki has had a different path of evolution here in the US than in Europe from what I understand, so the best person to answer your question as to what happens in Reiki I is the person who's going to teach the class. As you do your research, you'll find people online who offer attunements online or books who promise attunement. While such a thing is possible with Reiki, I personally recommend a learning setting that is going to provide you with direct support before and after your attunement. While I've never experienced any reactions to attunement, I've heard many direct reports of some mild reactions to the new flow of energy through their bodies. Everybody's body is different and adapting to the new flow of energy that comes with attunement is an individual experience. While I've never known anyone to need it, my Reiki I teacher made available follow-up healings for students if they needed it. I should point out that self-attunement is possible. However, it took Dr. Usui (and other masters before him) decades to accomplish this on their own and even then, several years to figure out how to use these skills. Reiki classes and their attunements provide a more efficient way of transmitting these skills from teacher to student. Reiki is a skill and is available to everyone. However, like any other skill, the connexion one has to that skill and the practise one puts into working with it enhances the skill of the attuned practitioner. Oh, and just to clarify, the "Healing Hands" that Old Soul mentions is a form of energy-work, just like Reiki. They work with similar energies, just a in different fashion and with different techniques. I hope this helps. Enjoy your Reiki treatment! |

illuster, I am attuned for Reiki, and I have also received many Reiki treatments. Being attuned for Reiki is a sort of a transformation of sorts. You become more sensitive to energies in yourself and others. Usually you have to wait a certain period of time between Reiki attunements in order to allow the transformation to set in. You can perform Reiki treatments on yourself, but it is generally not as powerful as receiving Reiki treatments from another practitioner. Receiving Reiki can be a powerful experience. The most powerful treatment I received was overwhelming, but it was overwhelmingly good. You can feel good energy, and a sense of wellbeing surging through your body. It can get quite intense. The practitioner can work in two ways...for general full body treatments, the practitioner works through a series of hand positions, starting at the top of the head (crown chakra), and working all the way down to the feet. For localized treatments, the practitioner focuses on a problem area. For example, I had issues with my GI tract, so my treatments were focused on my abdomen. After the session is over, the practitioner will clear away the negative energy that was removed from the body. It tends to linger above the body, so it is sort of fanned away as if it was smoke. At the end of a session, the patient may feel light-headed or jittery due to the energy they just received, so it might not be a good idea for them to drive. I highly recommend trying out a Reiki treatment for yourself. It's a great experience, and it is very effective. Take care, -Brian |

I've been attuned to Reiki 1. I cried when I had my attunement. I felt very emotional. When I give reiki to someone I feel the reiki energy come down from above through my head and down my arms. It feels very cool and my hands tingle. I don't feel much when someone give me reiki other than heat from their hands. However, I also learned Quantum Touch energy. Energy Healing : Acupuncture Therapy : Reflexology Therapy : Alternative Massage Therapy : Acupressure Points In Hands : Shiatsu Massage Therapy : Quantumtouch.com You can learn this from a book. It is slightly different, the energy feels much hotter to me. You pull it up from teh ground, up to the top of your head and back down your arms to your hands which tingle too. You also do a meditation breathing to keep your energy high. I prefer QT over reiki but I think both have their place. It's just what suits you. Reiki has more spiritual background as well as healing, whereas QT is more focused on practical healing. Enjoy |

Here is what I wrote shortly after having my Reiki I attunement. It was a powerful and transformative religious/spiritual experience for me. Quote:
I also learned Quantum Touch--in fact, my group worked with both healing techniques together. I don't think one is better than the other, but they are suited for different things. I think Quantum Touch is better suited for healing specific places on the body (especially joints) and Reiki is better for whole-body healing. I see Quantum Touch as gold energy and Reiki as silver.

Thanks for all the response. I’ve booked a Reiki-healing session for next week. It will be done by the lady who will be teaching the Reiki I-course. She sounded very nice on the telephone so I’m looking forward to it! |

There is a style of energy work, which does call itself "Healing Hands," which is a bit different from Reiki in practise, which is why I made a distinction in my response. (And I apologise, if in my answer it seemed like I was not respectful of your experience. That was certainly not my intention.) But, the real important thing is that it worked. (Didn't Shakespeare say something about "a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet"?) Illuster--please enjoy your Reiki experience. Let us know how it goes!
