Default olfactory hallucinations and psychic experiences

I was wondering if anyone here has experienced olfactory hallucinations, linking directly to any "psychic" experiences? of any type , if so I would love to know of some...

here is one deffention of this :

Olfactory aura symptoms
"Parosmia involves a distortion of the sense of smell -- the affected person reports smelling something other than the scent which is present -- for example, the person sniffs a banana but it smells like rotting flesh instead of a banana. Phantosmia involves olfactory hallucinations -- that is, there is no odorant present, but the affected person reports smelling something, usually something unpleasant."

I had an experience one day , there were no flowers in bloom as of yet, no buds on the trees and I was taken back by a strong smell of flowers and in that moment a wonderful memory of my mother,
but it was like I was in that memory in that moment all over again, I could feel her and smell her scent , all my emotions all of my being was taken into that experience

has anyone else had this? I refuse to believe that is just symptomatic of a mental illness , I think there is much more to it

I had one experience. I was driving home one day and all of a sudden I had the strong taste and smell of pepperoncinis in my mouth. This is not a food I normally eat but Steve is a big fan. The taste was so strong I couldn't fathom where it was coming from. But I noted the time and when I got home I asked Steve if he had been eating a bunch of pepperoncinis at that exact time and he looked at me funny and said, "Go look in the trash" where I saw the stems of about 11 of them. He confirmed that he was indeed eating them at the time I mentioned. It tripped me out. I really wasn't expecting an experience like that.... ever. But there it was.

Well, lately I've smelled strange smells without any source for the smell too. First it was rather unpleasant smells, but recently they are quite pleasant actually. The problem is just that I can't identify them. It doesn't smell like anything I know and I can't even describe it. I can't find what smells like that either, no matter how much I sniff around. It feels like it's just in my head, or directly under my nose, but when I sniff there, there is nothing. Strange

I would badly like to connect to my higher self or guides or whatever spiritual being, but I'm not able to see, hear or feel any. I was asking myself if maybe that's a form of communication? But how could I understand such a signal??

Old Soul, maybe it was really your mother trying to communicate with you?

I am always smelling things that no one else seems to smell. I am not sure what it means though. For a while I thought I just have a strong sense of smell, but this sounds more fun.

I think that was your mother coming to visit.

The most notable experience I had like this was about three years ago, one summer evening in my backyard I quite vividly (do you say vividly about odors?) smelled grandma and grandpa's farm. It was an unmistakeable aroma of fresh cut hay, baking bread, cows in the barn, pigs, rose gardens, the greasy smell of grandpa's shop...it really startled me the first time it happened - I instantly knew where I was and I hadn't been to the farm in 30-some years. This aroma came to me a couple more times, although a little less intensely and of shorter duration than the first.

Then a woman, with whom I had a vague acquaintance, contacted me to let me know, "I have a message for you from your grandmother if you're interested in hearing it." Well, that freaked me out (since at that time grandma had been dead about six years)! But it intrigued me as well.

When I met with the medium, one of the first things she said was that grandma had been contacting me but that I wasn't getting it because (grandma said), "She doesn't believe. But tell her she's been smelling me."

The ensuing messages can be credited with inspiring me to, well, not kill myself for one.

Grandma doesn't come around as frequently as she did when my life was in such crisis. And she usually only brings the rose garden rather than the entire farm now. But yeah, sometimes I get a strong scent of roses and a prickly, goosebumpy feeling all up and down my legs and arms and I know grandma's around - sharing the love.

Yes but only maybe once or twice. Not one of my natural strong points. The proper term for you describe is:

Clairalience (smelling)

In the field of parapsychology, clairalience [presumably from late 17th century French clair (clear) & alience (smelling)] is a form of extra-sensory perception wherein a person acquires psychic knowledge primarily by means of smelling.[13]

Spirits often communicate to loved ones this way as a way to say hello. Mediums who are more prone to this type of awareness often receive multiple types of smells, some non pleasant and visa versa as a way for the spirit or ghost (2 different things by the way) to communicate to the medium a situation, feeling, memory, ect.

Hi Rose of Cairo.
If the smell isn't familiar, you may have a mystery on your hands or, you may simply need to jog your memory.
If spirit senses you can discern a presence, the scent is also an invitation for you to further heighten your sensitivities.

Default I may have experienced this

I've discovered a strange ability--I think I can sense a spirit's presence through scent. The odors are associated with their last time on earth when I saw them or perhaps something they liked.

My father-in-law: I smell his spirit at a shoe cabinet that contained his shoes. The odor smells like the hospital. I was with him at the hospital when he died. I could sense his presence until my husband donated his father's shoes to charity. I smelled it strongly when I came upon a record collection in the house--I thought maybe it was my mother-in-law, since those were her records, but I realize that he must have liked & listened to them as well.

My mother-in law: her spirit smells like incense. I could smell it near the phone, where we kept a couple of her address books that contained phone numbers of her friends and relatives that she'd written down in them. I still can smell her spirit, although it is fainter. In the first year after her death, I could smell incense quite strongly near those address books and in other areas of the house. Ever so often I smell a whiff from the butsudan, as if she is reminding me to burn some incense as an offering. (She was Buddhist, I am Christian (Unity), but I maintain her altar in honor of her and my father-in-law.)

My mother: she passed away this past December. I was unable to attend her first funeral due to bad flying weather but will attend a second service in the summer. I had given her a shell necklace which was cremated with her; my brother sent me a few shells before her remains were pulverized. Since I received those shells, I have smelled a natural gas odor near the butsudan where her shells are kept in a small vial and also by our air conditioning unit. I sensed it is the odor of the crematorium as her remains was burned. I wonder if the intense heat bothered her, hence the reason her scent is by the AC unit as well as the butsudan (shrine). She and I had a contentious relationship while growing up, but became much better after I got married and moved away. I've read that unfriendly or unhappy spirits don't have nice scents, but I'm not sure if a natural gas odor would qualify as being unpleasant or not.

Today at church I smelled incense about 3 times. It was a faint odor. I'm not sure who that would be, since my mother-in-law makes her presence only at my home.

Hi. I just read your note and found myself hoping that maybe what you suggested has happened to me. I really don't think I have any sort of serious medical "malfunction" going on, like seizures, brain tumors, nasal infections, etc. .. But, I did have this incredibly weird experience last night, that both disturbed and intrigued me, and it has never happened to me before.

Basically, I had a, well, I guess, an olfactory nightmare of some sort. This odd and very unpleasant smell that I could not identify dominated and directed my dreams, which were odd and unpleasant as a result. The smell persisted for hours, instead of how we normally "get used to the smell and it goes away". There was nothing in my environment that would have produced such an odor, so I was really baffled.

Stranger still, later today when I visited an office supply store, I was drawn to this really neat stone-pictured mouse pad. What creeped me out was when I picked it up and caught a whiff of its scent... it was the EXACT smell I had dreamed about. EXACTLY. I was with a friend at the time and asked him what he thought of the smell, and was told it was neither pleasant nor unpleasant but very distinctive. I asked what he thought it smelled like, and he couldn't quite place it.

What the heck do I make of that? I am very much interested in believing that this isn't a sign of the start of some medical condition, but then what was it? It was weird enough having that smell occur on its own, without an environmental cause, without me finding that EXACT odor later today on a mouse pad in some store.

Anyway, if you have any ideas or thoughts, I'm happy to hear them! A weird psychic explanation would definitely be preferrable to the alternative. So, what do you think?

K, thanx for reading....and take care.

Well, I wouldn't personally say it is medical. It sounds like you had an experience of a premonition dream Lucky you. I don't have that ability I would start to keep a dream journal and keep track and see where it goes from there.

Personally for me, I was so crying one time a month ago and I went out to dinner with my family, but I was so grieving this event. And I realized at the table that I can either live my life in depression and grief or be happy. Crying is not getting me anywhere. But being positive would. And when I realized this-- I had an incredible experience of tingling sensations from my crown and then throughout my body. I felt like flying. I felt so floating and comforted and warm and weird. It was like this for a good 10 minutes and at that time we left the restaurant. I went into my car and started to smell roses and felt a pain in my chest. I was nervous thinking it was a heart attack! The pain came and went and the smell of roses was amazing. I found out later....my heart chakra opened. That was cool *LOL*

Hey! I think I just contacted you right around the same time you contacted me... What I mean is, you replied to a post I wrote on "olfactory & psychic", with my smelly nightmare that ended up with me sniffing a mouse pad with that same odor later on that day..

Then tonight, I was browsing the posts before replying to you, and sent you a message asking for a reading. Then I went back to my post to respond to your reply and realized it was the very same person !

...(I hope I'm making some sense) LOL

I also found your story about the positive attitude heart chakra (SP?) opening up to be very uplifting. I too believe we have a choice to be positive or not, and that our state of mind determines our quality of life. So, I hope to hear from you once again, friend !

Take care (O_^)

It's been noted before that saints and mystics often give off an amazingly sweet smelling floral scent when they appear to people. So your mother coming to you from the 'great beyond' could be the same thing, the same experience.

Also, when out in nature, I've noticed tree's and bushes often greet me with a very strong scent as I pass by them, this only happens once, and always catches me by surprize. When I go back past the tree or bush to try to re-experience the wonderful scent, it's not there, it's like a one shot deal. I read about tree's greeting people like this in a book, I didn't figure it out myself, it mystified me for years, when I finally found out I was like "so that's what that scent was?!?!"

Yes. It is a pretty strong ability with me. I have been smelling cigarette smoke--in various non-smoking environments, and often when I am alone--daily for the past few weeks. I have never had this experience before. It's such a high level of attention. It almost "feels" like protection from a spirit. I've been thinking perhaps my paternal grandfather, but who knows.

Believe me, I have considered every possibility, for example that I had somehow gotten the smell on my clothes, but no.

At first I was intrigued, but now I feel almost annoyed, because it's such an unpleasant smell.
