Default Its nice to know that my memory still works.

I have not had the memory I have since my daughter was born. UNTIL recently. I guess the memory does work like muscle. When you work it it gets better. Ever since I started school back up it has improved a TON!!

I'm getting back my photographic memory.

Anyone know some good memory exercises?

^ Yeah good tips, but I don't see how that helps memorize a list. I don't think it really helps for a phone number either.

If you want to memorize long lists, large sequences of numbers built up by hundreds of digits and ultimately recall the calendar of 20th century, then all you need to do is learn the Dominic System. Its based upon mnemonics and their effectiveness and power is fantastic.

Dominic O'Brian come up with this system and it is explained thoroughly in "How to Develop a Perfect Memory" book. Also you can find smaller article that stick strictly to the point: here. Be aware: this requires practice and you won't gain overnight enough experience nor understanding to utilize this system up to its fullest.

As for improving short-term memory I'd recommend doing the following with persistence:

Multiply 2 digit numbers in your memory. Don't write them down. Visualize the whole process as if you'd multiply them on your paper. Make both numbers 2 digit ones. Start with easier ones like 11*12 until you get the hang of it. Then as your skill increases make them harder, something like 69*84, 49*73, etc.

Do these three times a day; 3 multiplications per day, that's enough. After a few weeks you will be amazed how "easier" the process will go and that you will be able to recall larger sequence of numbers without relying on mnemonics and just using your memory.

Yes, exercising your memory is like working out and stressing your muscles. No pain, no gain.

PS: Also, if you are studying then I'd advice endeavoring into mind maps, too.

Hey hey Madhyena! nice to see you here are you following me!?

I also love mnemonics (Harry Lorayne) and photographic visualization (Kevin Trudeau)

Just like a memory system there is also a mathematic system where you can calculate all sorts of number crunching in seconds "speed mathematics by Bill Handley"

Excellent exercises for the mind

Learning mnemonic tricks like peg lists, link methods, associative methods for name/word recall, and learning foreign languages is VERY VERY good for memory, at least for mine.

Mnemonic tricks not only give you fantastic tools to remember stuff but it also improves that part of the memory that i call "natural, core memory" which is the memory that's able to see things like numbers and memorize it even without the use of mnemonic devices. This memory is also good for remembering where you left something like your keys, reading texts with more recall, and much more.

My memory for viewing things pictoral, written and numeric is awesome.

Thanks soooo much for the info everyone. I'll review those things. I certainly will need it in the next 8-10 years of my delayed education. LOL Seems odd to be back in school at 27. Especially since I want to go to medical school but will need to complete my bachelor degree first.

Mnemonics help me when its a lot of info for one certain area. But I usually don't have much trobule memorizing short precise info for several(and I mean LOTS) of seperate areas.

I had a high school teachers years and years ago that gave us the test before the chapter. We filled it in as we went. Well even though he would change the order of the questions he didn't change the order of the answers(thought I was prepared if he did start it up) so it was quite easy to pick out a "few" words of it.

Regardless I would love to work on my memory even more.

Is the speed math a book?? Or a "program" Math is not my best subject though I usually can do quite well on most of it.

I have read that puzzles(jigsaw ones) are linked with math too. Its interesting and reassuring because my 4 year old is a whiz at puzzles. She has been doing 24 piece ones since 2. And now can do 100 piece ones and she even had quite the chunk done on a 100 piece double sided one. Whats even more awesome is that she can tell you which puzzle each one goes to from one piece. For us that seems easy but for a 4 year old(atleast to me) that is amazing.

Its a book... I think there is an audio program by another author but I havent tried the audio one and not sure if the principles of calculations are the same or different.

Yes those tricks help. But then you just have a list of 40 memorable actors or names to remember!

Mostly the thing that helps me is repetition, but subconcious repetition. And it can't be forced on me either.
