I'm not into any of the "angry" type music that seems to be popular nowadays.. The only radio station I listen to is Minnesota Public Radio (which is only classical and easy listening). It just seems to me that there are alot of connections between heavy metal/rock music and violence.

In all fairness, classical music does have Prokofiev

After reading Power vs. Force, I went through my music collection and got rid of all the overtly noisy and negative stuff, and find that I'm getting more and more interested in quieter music. Always had a bit of a jazz habit, and now I've also started to explore classical music.

I'll be looking to this thread for reference

I listen to music from all eras but have always loved classical music from an early age. The melodies and emotions seem to reach a deeper level in me than anything else.

I don't know when I first started to like classical music, but these days I can't listen to much else. Its not a snobby thing, its just that when I am around pop and alternative kinds of music I find it really noisy and harsh to my ears. This is a huge change from being a death metal fan! I think I really got into classical stuff when I started to play piano. I first started with the classic piano pieces (rondo alla turka, moonlight sonata, etc.) and used that as a jumping point for other composers. I still shiver when I listen to a great beethoven sonata or chopin nocturne. I still like some pop and other modern music, but its not the same.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Mozart (symphony 40 is great), Choral pieces (Monks and Choirs of Kiev Pechersk Lavra: Chants of the Russian Orthodox Church), and beethoven (trios, piano concertos, symphonies, sonatas... the man is my hero!)

For anyone who hasn't seen Magnatune: free MP3 music and music licensing (royalty free music, production music and license music)., its an online record label that "is not evil!" They have excellent quality music and offer streaming downloads of all of it. You choose the price of the album and the musicians get half the purchase price. Its small, but its an amazing site! Please check it out!

I have one question for the shostakovich fans here. I have a hard time getting into some of the modern classical stuff, its not as pleasing to my ear as most of the early classical music. So help me out, why do you like shostakovich and other more modern composers? Do I just need to listen more?

Great thread!

I like music that makes me feel good, I don't care about genres.

A friend of mine was throwing away classical CDs. He didn't even consider listening to them because he was not "into" classical music. Neither was I, but I'm a curious kind of person. I listened to the bunch of CD's, and one of them really stood out: Chopin. I've been hooked ever since, collected all his work, read biographies and study his music inside out. I love that man, because he seems to describe a lot of the feelings I have in such a subtle way. Feels good to know someone understands. You can fake your feelings when you speak, but your music reveals what you truly feel. You can't hide that.

I like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Mostly on an intellectual level.
I like Chopin, Fauré, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Schubert, Liszt and Vivaldi on a more emotional level. I listen to a LOT more composers and genres, though.

Default Latecomer to Classical

I've gone through phases in the types of music I enjoy listening to. Up until my late 30s, my preferred music was rock and roll, although my piano lessons introduced me to classical and I did like Bach and Handel from the start.

In my late 30s, to my horror and amazement, I really got into Country music.

Then in my late 40s, I returned to Rock, and also listened to Rap, and other raunchy popular music.

But I started listening to Minnesota Public Radio (classical music) at work about five or six years ago, because it is less distracting to listen to. Now I listen to it all the time. I even leave the radio on all night, because if I wake up during the night, I focus on the music and it really helps me relax and get back to sleep.
