Uplift, thanks for clarifying--from the previous paragraph of what you said, I thought you were disagreeing.

Without body language, sometimes it's hard to read what people really mean.

I just read our friend's new thread (thanks for the link, Shamou)--cool.

Since the experiment has been cancelled by Scumbag... I thought that it would be OK to post the following info here...

How to make your muscles bigger

An excerpt...

" To get bigger muscles, you need bigger muscle cells, and that means increasing muscle-cell "volume." That's why cell-volumizing supplements are so popular these days among bodybuilders.

Muscle-cell volume is naturally sustained by creatine, muscle glycogen and water. Studies tell us that by packing more water into muscles, test subjects have been able to gain several pounds of muscle water within days, which sound like only a short-term benefit since it's not muscle protein.

But scientists believe that boosting muscle-cell volume can switch on anabolic pocesses for longer-lasting gains in muscle mass. In other words, these temporary gains can lead to long-term gains, which are the goal of every bodybuilder."

Personal note. I have talked to many people who have taken creatine... some have seen an almost instantaneous increase in muscular mass up to 4 lbs... where other did not see any changes...

Hey, Shamou, I don't want to argue, but I have been actively passionate in health and strength and fitness for over 35 years. The quest for scientific discovery of the exact cause of muscle growth has been raging for the whole time. I mean scientists and doctors even tried, (and some still do) to argue that steroids contribute nothing to muscle growth. Then there is the whole muscle cell hyperplasia argument. And the stretching to allow growth argument, and the high/low volume and intensity thing, and the protein thing, and the carb thing and the fat thing, the growth hormone thing, the insulin thing. Its endless, along with the conclusions. One constant though is words like might, may, could, possibly, believe...anything but 'definitely is'. No one has even been able to prove the benefits of stretching, despite a whole industry based on it. Just think, wow, here's a dinosaur or a lion. Excuse me, thats not fair! Just don't eat me for 10 -20 minutes, while I go through my scientific polysnchroplasmetricomplyicational stretching technique. People argue that fat loss and muscle growth preclude each other, they just forgot to tell sprinters.

The best thing is to figure out what works for you in building muscle, then it gets really funny, because just like the creatine thing, what works for one is useless for another, despite what scientists and test tubes say. There is one undeniable, irrefutable, constantly provable observation that works for everyone though. Normal teenagers equal rapid muscle growth, bristling health, energy and recovery. There's a lot that can be learned from that, which can be applied to adults. Then there's the sprinters...muscles make you slow and clumsy dont they. Meanwhile the fastest man ever gets rubbed out for life in his quest for massive thighs.

Er...Interesting thread.

Dear Mr. Scumbag,

X Trillion Cells are often 'right' about when to ease off and when to turn it up.

Here's some recommended reading for you from a Tokyo-based mind/body warrior.

justfiverules!

Pretty good article... however the subject matter does not have a major influence on Scumbag's experiment... since it was a 30 days experiment only... and for a young man... there is little chances that such an experiment, even if it is extreme, would have lasting physical influence...

However, if the experiment had been pursued to completion... some very valuable mental and psychological breakthroughs may have been achieved...

Shamou,

Actually, my meaning was that there must be balance.

There are a multitude of paths in which a person can expand, and I wanted to remind scumbag to make sure he expands along all paths, such that his life is truly full.

No matter how much spiritual experience I might end up having, I too understand the significance of banging 10's and making big money by my own personal ability. I do not kid: I think these are valuable goals for allowing him to feel self-worth in today's society.

But there is the eternal reality to worry about as well, and if he does not satisfy his potential for spiritual growth, he will find his life to be materialistic.

I can appreciate that… but Scumbag already had a thirty day program that most people would not have tried to accomplish in a full year…

You do have a point here… but I believe that most people find it relatively easy to find a comfortable spiritual life whereas the materialistic aspect of life is quite another matter…

Had Scumbag devised a thirty day program that would have stretched his resources to the limits… and done it successfully… he would have had an epiphany in self-discovery…

From that day on, he would have seen himself in a new light… he would have discovered personal resources that he did even not suspected that he had… he would have known that, no matter what, he could take up the lance and bring the Holy Grail home…

My whole life will change from this point forward, I'm going to accomplish all these great things, here is what I am going to do over the next month or year or whatever.

I have done this probably 15 times. I kid you not. I have done the exact thing you are doing at least that many times.

I even have a folder on my computer called My Archive of (Almost) Fulfillment with all of my attempts to do exactly what you are trying to do.

I'm not saying it's bad, in fact I would say it means you are on the right track, I'm just trying to help you avoid some miserable experiences.

Honestly, keep this plan, go for it, but if at the end of the month you find that you haven't achieved your goals, don't feel bad. From my experience, those first four goals are things you need to tackle one at a time, maybe two. Especially if you need serious work in any of those areas.

I can relate to you, because like I said, I have done the very same thing as you time and time again, and I've learned that true success, especially in the types of areas you are discussing, comes from long term commitment and dedication.

For example, right now I'm cutting my sleep from 8-9 hours a day down to 3-5, exactly what you are probably trying to do. I have a core 3 hour sleep and then 3 or 4 twenty minute naps. Let me tell you, this is HARD. People don't achieve this stuff, because you have to stay dedicated for a long period of time. I could not achieve any other goals on top of this one right now, and I am as motivated as they come.

I know from experience that when I write out "the perfect plan" to achieve all my dreams in a short period of time, the real truth is that I'm dissatisfied with how my life is right now, and this becomes kind of a fantasy escape.

Forget the fantasy, plan for the long term, and focus on being dedicated day in and day out. I'm sure you have those goals broken down into daily or weekly activities, so focus on one day at a time. This is the hardest part, hands down.

If at the end of the month, you went 30 days straight, and completed all the daily activities you broke those goals down to, believe me, it doesn't matter if the end result was what you wanted, you are a winner.

Go for it, let us know, but be warned, it's not easy.
