| he's good, the best in the world right now, but this is not good enough. Let's face it, tony robbins has no influence in the world right now. He doesn't have enough ambitions. |

I also think it's great that some people know and stand up for the idea that you don't need tons of money to be happy. Is being a billionaire qualitatively different from being a multimillionaire? Anyway, the way you are phrasing your question reflects a certain willful misunderstanding of what people are taking exception to. (Isn't part of NLP about trying to understand people's "maps of the world"?) I don't think people are upset that he makes a lot of money--I think people find his message confusing, wonder why his products are so expensive, etc. If his products are expensive in order to confer value on the teachings, then he could achieve that by charging on a sliding scale, based on current income. $5000 is a drop in the bucket for some people, but some may find that $500 or $50 has the same effect. |

| Anthony Robbins certainly has an incredible success story. I think that helps to explain why people listen to him. He's proven he can overcome many of the obstacles that his followers are struggling with at their own levels. His resulting wisdom enables him to see life differently. He wants to grow, to contribute, to touch other people. I was thinking about how he has overcome low self-esteem, a messed up childhood, his dad abandoning his family, adult obesity, being an adulterer, getting through divorce, having a business partner rob him of huge sums of money (in the early days of his business), emotional strain, and all different kinds of pain. He has evolved to develop the mental states he needs to build, create, love and teach others to enrich their own lives and the lives of others. He knows the past doesn't necessarily pave the future. Decisions begin with each of us. Emotions don't block his ability to do what he chooses. He uses emotions in his favor. These choices move him ahead. He thrives on being excited and challenged. He got into his life so deeply that he made it real. He isn't here to motivate us. He prompts us to ask why. What is it that drives us now? He believes that the internal force is the biggest drive. We all know how to think and we evolve to make it happen. We don't work in self-interest all the time. Explore where you are so you can figure out how you can connect differently with other people. What makes the difference in the quality of people's lives. Robbins helps us to understand our needs, otehr people's needs and what is it that is shaping us to prepare us to contribute. There's the science of achievement. How do you take what you dream about and make it happen? The art of fulfillment is something to learn. Robbins teaches us to see that we use excuses to explain why we don't do things. We may say we don't have the money to do something, but what we really mean is that we don't have confidence in our resourcefulness. What determines your resources? Decisions shape our destiny. The history of our life is based on what we choose to do and what we convince ourselves we can't. Anthony Robbins inspires us to build our own psychological strength. |

Tony is into helping people to lead successful lives... and a successful life means abundance in all its forms... abundance in health, love, serenity, contribution, money...etc... Now a wise person does not seek advice from someone who cannot take his own advice... they will not buy something that the seller has not bought himself... So, apart from being a great communicator, I think that Robbins' influence is due to the fact that he does not only talks the talk... but he also walked the walk... he's been there... done that... so it inspire confidence in his message... and, if you truly believe in a message... chance are that you will buy into it and apply it to your own life... Now, I know that some people cannot afford to pay for a $5,000 seminars... but his entire message can be found in the Robbins' Bible... "Awaken the Giant Within" ...so there is no excuse... The main reason that people will criticize Robbins is the fact that he tells you that you are responsible for your own life... if you want to succeed you must take massive action... that is the part that they cannot stomach... so, they have to find a culprit for their own inefficiency or laziness... and in many cases... that culprit is Robbins... . |

| As I said earlier, if Tony Robbins helps you, more power to you. I'm sure much of what he says is good sound advice from a brilliant man. The level I'm looking at that makes me uncomfortable is the sort of cult-like atmosphere around him. I was subscribed to his Power Talks and had bought several of his books and big tape sets years ago, and was a bit of a Tony Robbins addict myself. It was an emotional whiplash experience, therefore, to go from hearing of his devotion to Becky and how he was continually trying to "add value" to their relationship to hearing of the ugly way he dumped her. That woke me up from a kind of trance I was in about him--not that I expected him to be perfect, but I expected him to have basic integrity, given all his teachings. Quote:
I would agree that to become a billionaire, one would have to take massive action. What I would personally not subscribe to is the idea that being a billionaire is somehow "succeeding." And, I would suggest, ideas such as needing a billion dollars are not conceived in integrated present moment awareness, and a billion dollars does not represent a real need, but rather a symbolic need, possibly stemming from unconscious, unprocessed emotions. As someone once said: Quote:
I would love to still be a seminar junkie myself, but I'm sort of on to myself a little more these days. So I'm working more on emotional processing. Megan

| I was at a conference in Montreal called "The Power Within" early april of this year. Anthony Robbins was the 2nd to last speaker (Bill Clinton was the last). I can honestly say that Robbins was way better than Clinton. More entertaining, motivating, exciting and more. I personally took 2 pages of notes during his speech (while I could sit since he had us standing, cheering, yelling and jumping up and down for a large part of his speech). I didn't take any note during Clinton's speech and left before the end. What an experience those 45 minutes were! I will definitely read Robbins' books. René |

| This is interesting stuff. I've never read any of his books, but I think I might, based on the feedback here. From the outside he seems like a bit of a scammer, but it seems like he does create some value depending on what you do with. I look forward to listening to "Get the Edge" anyone else used that one? Any other recommendations?

| Getting the customer emotionally engaged is key to selling products of any kind, and no one knows this more thoroughly than Tony Robbins. Just be aware that all this 'excitement' has a purpose. The Rick Ross forum leaves one less than convinced that Tony Robbins has any compunctions about cleaning out one's bank account and running up one's credit cards while one is in the thrall of said 'excitement,' so...let the buyer beware. This in no way implies that any specific information one receives is not potentially helpful, but just to counsel caution when in that specific environment, in the same way one would be (I hope) cautious while in a highly emotionally charged religious environment. No one has your best interests at heart quite so much as you do, if you're awake and aware of your surroundings, and in possession of your more rational faculties. Realize you're being seduced and consciously decide if that's the state you want to be in while a very expensive product is being hawked to you by an NLP master. Might want to leave your check book and credit cards at home if you go to a seminar. FWIW. Megan

| Maybe if you had gotten "emotionally engaged" in following Robbins' teachings... you'd be out there succeeding instead of devoting your time trying to save the poor souls who who cannot display accountability for themselves... . |

| How do you know she's not? That was a rather contentious post. |

| I do believe that Megan is sophisticated enough and articulated enough to defend herself... and I don't feel that it would be fitting for me to treat her in a condescending way... so, I simply put it out there the way that I saw it... If I have hurt Megan in any way... I sincerely apologize... . |

| Robbins' teachings are good. He's one of the few who emphasize taking action and that alone has to be saluted. However I'd agree with Megan that Robbins creates a cult-like environment to do the money-squeezing and that this can be dangerous to some if they get "hooked". How can a philosophy based on self-empowerment lead to a cult? Just look at Scientology for a first-class example. Or for a more matching example, try Objectivism. If you just read the book, take some of the ideas out of there, mainly the idea of taking action, you'll do fine. If you go all the way with seminar after seminar, it may be harmful to some. It's a bad idea in general to let other people do the thinking for you and this is exactly what cult-like environments foster. I think it's something that can't really be helped. Personality cults even tend to form around around public figures who don't even like it, but for self-help-gurus (the name's not coming out of nowhere), it's good marketing. And this doesn't apply to just Tony Robbins, but it's a general rule I think. The Zen-advice "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him!" should be cherished in the self-help area. Learn the ideas, understand them, evaluate them critically and don't follow any leader. |
| |||
| Shamou, no apologies needed--I've been around forums too long to take "kill the messenger" responses personally. However, "kill the messenger" also kills the discussion, unless the 'messenger' wants to return the favor and start a flame war. Not interesting. I think exploiting vulnerable people really can be helped, and gurus, of all people, should be leading the way on that, but, other than that, I think Agnostic's post is quite to the point. So, are you interested in suppressing the message or engaging the messenger? Megan

| I have studied and practiced Robbins’ teachings for decades… It has been extremely beneficial for me… it has been directly responsible for the high degree of personal happiness that I enjoy today… so I am a strong Robbins advocator… Being a Robbins proponent has been quite successful in most cases but it has also met with its share or resistance… however, I have to this day not met or heard anyone who discredited any of Tony’s techniques or what he has to say… the critics were always directed at Robbins himself or the marketing techniques of his organization… Therefore I am highly suspicious of the motives of his detractors… and I suspect that the object of their discontentment is a reflection of their own ineptness at implementing what Robbins teaches rather than a valid critic of those teachings and techniques… In other word… if they try and fail… they don’t blame themselves but shoot the messenger… . |
