For those who are geographically mobile, how did you accomplish that? I'm wondering about finding employment in other countries, but I'm having a tough time finding out about opportunities available. |

Although I'll take a look at those guides on the site you listed there, or for any more modern equivalents. Last edited by TheIronStar; 06-04-2007 at 03:29 AM.

I would suggest narrowing it down to the countries you want to work in and then go from there. If you're in a profession which has a regulating body, law, medicine etc the statutory bodies can tell you a lot about what you need to do to work. Plus I know Singapore and Canada both have quite good sites talking about how to work there for people in general (can't remember the addresses though...).

| I'm currently doing software development for a financial firm. I'm not sure how much longer I'll be in that, but it's so far the only thing I suspect I'm the slightest bit hireable in at this time. Quote:

Are you looking to truly be mobile, or are you simply looking to swap your current permanant location with another one?

Well in this case, changing my location will require mobility. It certainly becomes easier to be able to really choose one's area when one knows that there are very hot opportunities directly available to one in various places. I don't know how permanent it will be, though; if I hear of something better once I become mobile, maybe I'll make yet another swap later on. Northeastern USA right now.

Maybe you could make another inventory of your personal professional assets and see where some of those could lead you... When all hell has broken lose... there is only one place that we can go... and that is up... The very best of luck to you... .

TIS, Are you permanent or contract? I know of IT permies who asked and got transfers from NY to Singapore and then to Tokyo. Internal mobility is something they do focus on for staff who are good and who want to go where the action is. Despite what you may read about IT outsourcing to India and other BRIC countries (which is definitely growing), there are still great IT Finance jobs in London and NY. Though Singapore is really growing like crazy, as these Firms ship out more and more Back office functions ...and also to India. Speaking of India, I believe there is a growing demand for IT Project Managers who can manage projects and staff from both the Sub-Continent and the West. Having a recognized PM certification and then some experience could open up many of those mobility doors... Good luck! |

Maybe London then, if I continue doing what I'm doing. I don't plan on ever going to NY again unless I have no other choice.

| http://www.workingin-australia.com/ That site has all sorts of info about skills shortages, visas, living arrangements, bank accounts, health care etc. etc. It looks like there are actually opportunities in specific IT industries. Thats if you are considering Australia. |

check out the 4 hour work week if you haven't already. mandatory read. Right now I'm in the process of going through the steps to being geographically mobile. Another idea for consideration is outsourcing your job search to someone that specializes in overseas relocation. |
