me and my friend agreed on this , that is a lot of books ( self improvement , body building , make money ) they do not teach u the technical skill of achieving what u want. In another word the author are just beating around the bush, they just talk about the general stuff which are quite irrelevant , but not about HOW TO DO IT AND WHY MUST DO IT. For example: i was interested in body building . I went to the library to look for books to study about what to do. They just mention protein is important , carbo is good, fat got two types and water is important . But they will never tell you about the "trade secret(technical skill) " of the particular subject . I learn most of the useful knowledge through asking experienced people in forum . Also , my friend read a book about investing by Warren Buffet. He says that the book just mention about investors should-be-attitude , warren buffet's background etc etc ... But the book never mention about WHY HE CHOOSE TO INVEST IN THE PARTICULAR COMPANY , HOW HE THINK AND AND MADE THE DECISION. BOOKS WILL JUST NEVER TELL U ABOUT THE "REAL" TECHNIQUE . U HAVE TO BE WISE IN CHOOSING BOOKS TO READ. THE SECRET IS NOT IN THE BOOK.

Hmm... "THE SECRET IS NOT IN THE BOOK.!!!" The mindset is extremely important. That alone is sufficient to give you 80% of the success you seek. Experience has tell me that reading and learning from these books have empowered me with knowledge to succeed in the things I wish to succeed in, for example, in Internet marketing. The closest possibility of you to learn from Warren Buffet in real life is close to zero, hence by reading his books, its a bridge to his mindset, his way of life... And I'm very sure some of Warren's books did mention about techniques, which focus on the How-to and not only the Why. read the book 3-4 times, apply NLP modeling, it's life transforming

Agreed... but just how do you get in touch with those answers...??? Just for a starter... why don't you come up with my real name... that should be an easy one for you... .

A book is like any tool... there are good books... so so books... and bad books... And just like a tool... the success that you are having with it... or what you can create with it does not depend solely on the book (tool)... but mostly on the person using it... .

Some books focus on theory, others on application. If you want a step-by-step explanation of what it takes to complete a task using a particular technique, buy a book that focuses on application.

| Second thread on the uselessness of books - the publishers should listen... Of course, the secret can not be in the book. The whole point of publishing is to make knowledge, you know, publick. These days, any good book that contains solid original thoughts gets rehashed, retold and replayed in a million of blogs within weeks. For example, at this point you don't really have to read the original GTD book by Allen. Just read whatever comes up on the first page of Google results on the topic and you will have a pretty good understanding. You be able to start implementing it in your life. This is a problem of the media evolution that we are experiencing. The internet and the blogosphere are the new books. I think in a few years (if it didn't happen already) most of the best stuff will be published on the internet first. Including fiction, science and everything else. Still there is a large body of printed literature that can still be useful and insightful. Actually, after reading "Buffetology" (I'm not sure this is the same book mentioned by taitouwah), I've got quite an insight into the way Buffet invests. Probably I won't become as good investor as Buffet, but at least I know that there is this way of investing and not speculating and it made at least one person very rich. This knowledge alone allows me to resist most of sensationalist advertisement on "get rich fast through speculation" Of course to get to any results I will need some additional reading on fundamental analysis, and then get my hands dirty with actual stock trading. But understanding the core idea of Buffet investment strategy was worth it. And the fact that we can apply the same thinking to the areas of life, other then finance, makes this book a very good one.
