I'm finding it difficult to get on with my career work at the moment, because I have other needs and wants. Problem is, that it is detrimental to my career that I work very hard for the next few months, but as I've been a workaholic all my life, im starting to want to have some fun, but at the most crucial time in my career. My main problem is ive been getting to know myself over the past 3 years, but I haven't really fully absorbed that self, and at the moment I just want that time completely absorbing and enjoying that self. What can I do, I've told myself I need to hold off, and see the future goals, but its not working.

I get what you mean, you feel that you need to invest time in your career and that if you don't invest the required time, your future may suffer. At the same time you are feeling an urge to complete a path of self discovery which you started a few years ago. I know what you mean about career, but bear in mind that after that initial hard bit, they don't ease up. They change, but they don't become easier. Perhaps you need to take stock of everything you have in your life that you invest time in and prioritise. Also make some mental notes about what it is that you feel you need to do to finish your journey. When making decisions like this it is important to have everything clearly set out. Look at things like 'should it realy require that much of your time at work to acomplish the tasks you need to acomplish'. I got caught in a work long hours trap early in my career until my boss said to me that it was all well and good that I work all these hours, but if I can't finish my job in the alloted time, perhaps they were asking too much of me (meaning work smarter not harder). look at Steve's articles on triage, prioritising and productivity. |
