Default Does computer aid or harm productivity?

I would like to know your personal experience.
Of course there are pros and cons...
You get helpful informations for free and find many people who also seek for personal development, but on the other hand most people use it to cure their boredom or in order to procrastinate.

Before I got my computer I was quite creative and productive, but the last 7-8 years I wasted so much time on the internet.
I want to use Steve Pavlina´s blog in order to make real change, but I use it at a reason to surf the net for hours.

How can I gain advantage from Steve´s articles without using the comptuer too often?

I used to sit behind my computer for hours without really doing anything... just looking around finding new stuff. Nowadays I only search the internet when I really need to find something, instead of looking around without a real purpose.

I'm also a lot more creative when not behind a computer. Every time I try to write an article behind my computer I always have to search for the right words, but when I'm using pen and paper I don't have that problem at all.
The same goes for design work.. Behind a computer I can never come up with a good idea.

I'm not really sure why, but computers always give me some kind of stress.

It's exhausting for your brain. It's been found that some people who use the computer late at night have problem sleeping.

"the computer" neither aids nor harms - the computer doesn't 'do' anything.

it's the user who does what they do with it, and the user who aids or harms, (or whatever value one assigns to it). The computer is just a machine; there's nothing 'bad' or 'good' about it - it's just a hunk of metal - a tool. As with all tools, it can be used for good or ill, which is entirely in the hands of the user.

How you use it, and whether it's helpful or harmful, has nothing to do with the machine - it's about how you use it and perceive it.

simple - don't use the computer too often.

read the articles you want, then log out.

if you notice you're making up some kind of excuse or rationalization to spend hours doing stuff that's not useful, well stop doin' that.

there's all kinds of little things you can do to support yourself, or 'remind' yourself to log out. .... set a timer - log on only when you have a certain amount of time before an appointment - set up with a friend to give you a support call at a certain time to break your gaze, and remind you to get your behind away from the screen -

but however you do it, computer time-management is all up to you. Practice self-discipline if that's what's called for.

it has nothing to do with the computer itself -- only with our own choices about it.

What about EMF from computers. Maybe that is one reason why people get easily stressed behind a computer?

This is a GREAT explanation. You choose what to do with the computer.

I don't get stressed by computers. I'm actually very relaxed behind a computer and even more relaxed when messing with the internals (unless I broke something ).

me too st33. 'stressed' is subjective.

for me, using the machine, and/or going online whether for study or research, or just for fun - is a relaxing activity. i can zone out a little, have some fun, let my mind wander to links and other fun stuff i may never have learned about or discovered....

it's also a fantastic way to keep in touch with my huge network of friends all over the country and the world; we don't see each other often, but now thanks to many internet tools, we're in touch every day, and more in each other's lives than we ever were before by using only the telephone. for me it's a fun and wonderful learning tool, and also, an exponential expansion of more sharing and communication with other people.

i have no problems associated with the time i spend on it - i get on and get off when it suits me. just like a wrench. i use it when i want or need to, then put it down when done.

simple.
