Tomorrow will be the first day of my 30 day trial where I am restricting the use of any forum (including this one) to zero. Lately I've been finding myself surfing the web without a clear focus on anything, this has severely hindered my ability to produce the results I need. Its a great way to procrastrinate through out the day. I enjoy this forum very much but real life>forum life lol. If anybody spots me around here feel free to send me a rant message because I'd probably deserve it haha. I'll make another thread if the trial is over and what I'll do next, I'll probably return to the forums for no more than 30-60 minutes a day (strictly). Start Date: 18-05-2007 End Date: 16-06-2007 Wish me luck and don't forget to bitch against me if you see me post here, you have permittion. Ps. I'll watch this thread today while working to read some of the responces, so start the bitching tomorrow NOT today lol.

Good luck freelancer! I did the same thing recently. Just before Easter, I promised myself and my wife (who was getting fed up with me spending so much time on them) to stay off for 4 weeks, as it was starting to get compulsive and it was keeping me awake at night. It is interesting (and possibly embarrassing!) to look at what you had written 4 weeks earlier. You will feel different and have a different view of things, I promise!

If I cut down the daily access I'm back to full throttle within ehm a day? Also wanna bet I stay away from the forums for 30 days? Your right though, its a tough challenge. Decided to take additional measures, everytime one of my parents catches me reading/typing on the forums I'm going to pay them a to be decided sum of money (thinking something like 5 euro's). I'll even show them what the forums look like haha.

The first few days are the worst - the uncontrollable twitches, the nail biting, the sneaking down in the middle of the night, only to discover that your partner has hidden the mouse!

How to stay away is to ask yourself if you really get anything from being in forums. As long as you can make the answer such that you don't get benefit, know what I mean? And it sounds like you are fed up in a way, so I bet your answer would be something like, you just get to waiste time and get agrovated and feel like rel life is slipping. I've cut back a lot of online stuff since finding this forum - used to be more even though I post in this one still. And often I wonder why I'm spending time here. What is the benefit? I could do fine without it seems. Remind yourself that real life > forum life, in other words. You will survive. I'd say PM is forum useage btw. Also are you cutting out idle web surfing? Or stupid emails? Just wondering how extreme you are trying to go.

But your right, no PM's for me either. So to anybody trying to contact me in these 30 days, well tough luck lol. Quote:
Forums start to shimmer through as a bit of a artificial way of communicating, like there's a layer of dust between everyone and you never get a chance to really talk. I've also got the feeling that most advice on message boards gets easily dismissed... Well to be honest my focus at any one point in life is generally very narrow in a sense that I'm just not interested in anything else than that particular subject. For me its right now its PD and I've read the good free stuff online so far, if I'd want to read more I'd have to look around (which I don't feel the urge to do). Besides I'm now at a time to USE the stuff I learned. My email has never been a huge problem, spend like 15 minutes a day on it...(only ~140ish messages unread, meh I weed good but delete bad lol)

Good luck, Freelancer! You'll be a better person for doing this. In fact, you should probably spend part of your 30 days deciding whether or not you should ever return. These forums are a good support network, but I'd eventually like to be strong enough to live without them or without the internet in general. It's a great research tool, but 99% of the time I'm researching things I really don't need to be.

I probably don't really need these forums and you don't need me. In the end I might decide to never return. So perhaps this is the last time we 'talk' perhaps not. I will probably make a post at the end of the 30 day period, or perhaps not if I want to continue my trial... Either way it was nice talking to you, this is my last post or perhaps not. We'll see, all you have to know is to watch out for Remco Heerdink for I will take over the world. Ain't life interesting? You never know whats going to happen untill it happens...

Best of luck, Freelancer. I was managing to stay away for a while, but have been wandering back a bit over the past week. Perhaps I should join you. This place is very addicting, though. It's one of the few places on the web I can get into a serious, intelligent debate without being censored, so it certainly fills a need. It's no good for productivity, though.

I have been in another forum since 17-Oct-2005 and I joined this one this one a little over a month ago… and I would dare to say that I have learned almost as much as if I had attended College for that period of time… Spending time on these forums demands that you evaluate other people’s opinion, that you find out the “essential points” in long rambling posts… if also forces you to do researches to substantiate your opinions… it adds to your vocabulary… etc… So, I would certainly not think that time spent on forums is idle time… however, it is for each of us to reach our own conclusion on that subject… . |

I agree Shamou. I have a theory that motivation is highly linked to interaction with others... if you see other people doing something it makes things much easier... perhaps that is programmed in... you see people growing here on these forums, and you post your own results and you are motivated to learn and grow and create because it actually affects other people instead of being some abstract thing in your mind with no relation to the outside world. But you've just got to make sure you participate in forums that help you accomplish your life purpose. |
