Default What is your daily routine?

Tell us what you do everyday from the time you get up from your bed to slipping into wonderland.

My Routine

I've recently moved to a new city and staying with a friend and looking for a job, so right now I'm a certified bum. But I do have a routine

09:30-10:30 : Wakey-wakey, sit around soaking up the sun in the balcony and wait for roomies to leave for work.

10:30-10:45 : Brush Teeth & Other bathroom indulgences.

10:45-12:30 : Check email, call consultants, check up on resume status and try to arrange an interview.

12:30-13:00 : Lunch

13:00-15:00 : make more calls and browse around.

15:00-17:30 : make more calls and plant some seeds for tomorrow.

17:30-18:00 : shower and get dressed.

18:00-21:00 : go out for a walk/ go to the malls/ check out bookstores etc.

21:00-22:00 : dinner, catch up with roomies and relax.

22:00-01:00 : read book.

01:00-01:30 : brush teeth and get ready for bed.

01:30 : lie down in bed and visualize self having a job, a cool apartment and wearing cool clothes, doing cool things, travelling to cool places with a heavy work schedule and being happy and fall asleep in the same process.

well... I'm unemployed too... I don't have such thing as a repeated routine but well...

Wake up at 9 or so.
Breakfast, maybe seeing some MTV and VH1, to see what's going on and some classics.
Then going to the computer (If I don't have a job interview).
Maybe playing, writing, or singing music.
Lunch at 2, as usual in Spain.
Try not to watch the news while lunching...
Go the course I go now from 3 to 7.
Take a walk, I use to walk an hour each day, or go to the swimming pool instead.
Go to my chess club with friends and to the bar we use to go.
Dinner at 10, as usual in Spain.
Maybe we see some movie, maybe I go back to the PC.
Go to sleep, maybe listening to the radio for a while.

By far this is the best routine I've read. It's amazing how much you do in your ordinary day. You work 8 hrs and then you take classes for 3 .5 hrs. I admire the way you live your life and I'm gonna take it as an example to push myself! Thank YOU!

Workday routine:
0400- revelry, let cat out
0400-0500- Shower, stagger about trying to boot cerebral cortex, check e-mails. If I'm awake enough, do abbreviated Qi-Gong routine- 8 silken brocades. Pack breakfast/lunch. Head out door.
0500-0600- Drive 50 miles to work, listen to podcasts/music
0600-1430- Sit in cubicle, do work if I have any, try to stay sane
1430-1600- Drive 50 miles home in start of rush-hour traffic, listen to podcasts/music. Get groceries if needed.
1600-1630- Decompress, check e-mail, feed cat, plan rest of evening
1630-1900- work on various small projects around house. If no leftovers for dinner/lunch, cook. Do laundry, wash dishes, etc.
1900-2100- eat dinner, relax, read/watch TV/surf, groom cat for ticks
2100 taps, lights out

Weekend Routine:
0800 (or so) wake up, let cat out
0800-1000- shower, Qi Gong, cook breakfast, check email, straighten up house, plan projects for day
1000-1800- Work on various large projects throughout house. Completely forget about lunch.
Saturday: 1800-2000- Stop work for Prairie Home Companion, feed cat, Cook dinner
Saturday: 2000-2200- eat dinner, relax, read/watch TV/surf, groom cat for ticks
Saturday:2200- Bedtime
Sunday: 1800-2100- Cook big pot of food for rest of week, eat dinner, relax, read/watch TV/surf, groom cat for ticks, prepare for another week at work
Sunday: 2100, Taps, lights out

It's not very interesting, but that is what I do and will be doing until my house is ready for market.

This is interesting.

5:30 - 6:30 Wake up. Spend one hour on my highest priority project. [This is a new idea from these forums. Thus far, it's working very well, so I expect it will stick]

6:30 - 7 Breakfast and shave

7:00 - 8:30 Work out (weights, bike). If on bike, listen to book on tape. Shower. Drive to work.

8:30 - 5:45 Work, with break mid-day for lunch, relaxation, and to play internet game

5:45- 6:10 Commute home, listen to book on tape

6:15 Arrive home, dinner with family, play with kids, some home tasks

7:30 - 8:30 Get kids ready for bed.

8:30 -10:30 Evening time with wife. Often reading, movie or tasks around home. Occasionally office work.

Yea, this game really messed me up in my first half of this semester. I swear there would be days where i play 8-14 hours straight. No joke. It was a real GPA dropper...

5 AM - 6 AM Feed dog ("the fuzzy alarm clock"), make coffee, do music till 6 AM
6 AM - 6:30 AM - Shower, get dressed for work, begin commute
6:30 AM - 9 AM - Arrive at train station, commute to work. Make music on my laptop, read, write, listen to music, get a head start on work
9 AM - 4:50 PM - Work
4:50 PM - 7 PM - Duck out, commute home - same routine as above
7 PM - 8 PM - Eat dinner with my family, practice piano with the kid, put kid to bed
8 PM - 10 PM - Make lunch for tomorrow, iron clothes, chat with wife, make more music

I've been slipping off this lately (I got out of my exercise habit right when the seasons changed, was was a real one-two punch!), but when I was on this habit it worked out really well.

Hear, hear! A few years ago I played FF11 (same poison, different brand) to play with a bunch of my friends that seemed to enjoy it a lot. About 2 months and a lot of waste hours later, I quit. It wasn't easy, but counting all the hours I "played" the game (most of it seemed like work, actually), and seeing how much MORE time I was going have to play the game just to keep up with my friends (so I could play with them, the whole point!) gave me the motivation I needed to hit "uninstall".

Those mmorpgs are bad news, just say no.

My routine sucks.

8.30 get up, dressed and check email
9.30 realise it's time to go to work and I can't find my shoes/bag/hat/key
9.45 leave house and walk to work
10.05 arrive at work, work, run out of stuff to do, browse the net
13.00 go to sainsburys to pick up lunch, eat it at my desk
16.00 leave work, walk home
16.30 get home, sit at computer waiting for husband to get in with kids
17.00 kids get in, husband makes dinner, I continue browsing/chatting online
18.00 eat dinner and send the kids to bed, chat with husband
19.30 husband goes to work, I pretend to be a blogger but end up wasting time online
1.00 husband gets home, we chat and watch CSI, I keep randomly surfing
2.00 we go to bed

I waste so much time online, and I have so much stuff I could be doing. I should make better use of my time.

Here's what I've been doing for about the past 6 months.

05:30 - 06:00 wake, personal hygene (forgotten by most geeks), take care of dog, get dressed, check e-mail
06:00 - 06:30 Commute to work. (I generally listen to audiobooks of the classics... 1984, One Flew over the CooCoo's Nest, etc)
06:30 - 07:30 Morning blog routine. (With my job, I have to try to keep current on technologies)
07:30 - 11:00 Work
11:00 - 12:00 Business development lunch with whomever (ala: Never Eat Alone book)
12:00 - 17:30 Work
17:30 - 18:30 Commute home (about 30 min in, and 60 home.. I hit the evening rush)
If friends are over: (averages about twice a week)
18:30 - 18:45 Check/respond to e-mail, Wind down.
18:45 - 20:00 Dinner, discussion of various topics, etc.
20:00 - 22:30 Games or tv (Generally playing Catan, or dealer's choice poker)
22:30 - 23:00 Shower, check e-mail, and go to bed.
If friends aren't there:
18:30 - 19:30 Check/respond to e-mail, Wind down (play counterstrike, etc)
19:30 Announce to the wife that I am home. (before my unwind time, I will generally be snappy at anything she has to say. After my unwind time, I'm a pleasent person. Heavy traffic makes me very irritable)
19:30 - 20:30 Dinner, and discussion of her/my day, and scheduling stuff
20:30 - 22:30 Projects around the house
22:30 - 23:00 Shower, check e-mail, and go to bed.

You'll note that I work 10 hours. I work Mon -> Thr, and have Fri to make up any lost time.
You'll also note that I didn't list tv up there... I generally watch a total of about 2 hours a week. (House, and whatever else... usually during dinner)

Weekends:
07:30 Wake
??
23:00 Bed

I need to add exercise into my schedule... Most likely will be combo of yoga and kettlebells.

02:35 11:40 Sleep

I found monitoring my time usage gives great insight into where the time goes and figuring out connections between my activities and how I feel. For example, a lack of sleep causes me to feel tired Actually, I found if I regularly slept less than 8 1/2 hours, I started feeling more and more drained and that I often needed the weekend sleep ins to re charge or I'd feel worse the next week.

Regards,
From Shannan

10:00-12:00 Psychology class
12:00-1:00 Lunch, talking to friends
13:00-17:00 Job on campus
17:00-18:00 Dinner

19:00-19:30 Running errands
19:30-20:00 Sound Design class

20:30-23:30 Homework
23:30-00:45 Getting ready for bed

(and I don't get enough sleep, but as you can see I couldn't really take time out from anything else either! Ahhhhh! How did Steve graduate in so few semesters?)

Hey first of all stop being so hard on yourself. It's okay to be the way you are. Just take a look at my daily routine and see how much better off you are. Don't say you pretend to be a blogger, just try to do something about it. The more judgemental you are on yourself, the more you're gonna lag behind.

Allow me to suggest you a blog of this really cool woman who's really blogging very well:

Just check the above link out and see if you can relate to something.

Hope you like it

I would really like to get into a routine but I work different jobs on different days and own a business as well, so one day is rarely the same as the next.

For me I think just starting my day earlier would make a huge difference in productivity but I when I'm in bed I just don't make myself get up earlier then I need to.

I've read some of Steve's stuff about becoming an early riser but it's not taking... Even worse is that if I do get up at a decent time, all I can think about is what can I get done so I can have a nap. It's rather ridiculous actually.

I know I'm really the only one who can change the behavior. Apparently I just don't want it bad enough. Any thoughts??

Hey

I just read that you're a designer in New Delhi. We have a designer that builds websites for us in New Delhi - thought it was kind of funny. You obviously work for someone else - ever thought of working for yourself??

hey - i just replied and realzed I was mixing up some of your info with the person you responded to - if you're looking for a job you obviously don't work for someone else - at least not yet. Have you thought about looking for work through places like Custom Web Design and Programming. Freelance Programmers. Outsource Web Development Outsourcing That's how we hooked up with our designer in India and numerous other people.

Just a thought!

By the way - these messages are meant for Gautam - I don't use forums very often and clearly need more practice

4:40am - Wake up, stretch a little
4:50 - Meditate
5:15 - Take a walk, try to get the dog behaving a little less neurotic while doing so
6:00 - breakfast, spend time with wife and son
7:00 - Work on something high priority, whether it's a creative or journalistic project, or on occasion business work
9:00 - Cook some vegan soup or curry for lunch or dinner, cooking is a good time to think things over, so I find it a good idea to cook after working
11:00 - attend some lectures, only three days of the week
3:00pm - magazine work; editing, technical, marketing, management, whatever is called for
6:00 - Play with son before bed, eat dinner, watch Stargate or Battlestar or something with wife. It would be Firefly, but the bastards cancelled it.
8:00 - Check personal email, do some reading, visit this forum I usually get sick of this and started working until bedtime, which is
11:30 - visual meditations until sleep comes.
4:40am - Start again.

Actually, yesterday was the year's last exam for the uni degree I'm taking, so today I skipped straight to 8:00pm's items when I woke up. But that's a rough guide to what I do each day. The only things that are always the same are the waking times and the meditation times.

By far this is the best routine I've read. It's amazing how much you do in your ordinary day.
Thanks. I think my current routine sucks because there is so much commuting involved, you can forget about working on stuff in a local train or a bus.

Great thread, I love stuff like this ! I'm a full-time illustrator and I work from home. It's been my dream job for years and I'm finally doing it and absolutely love it! My typical day is:

6:30 AM - Get up, stretch, tidy house, feed cats, do dishes.

7:50 AM - Have breakfast, watch cartoons.

8:00 AM - Make cup of tea, sketch in studio for 1 hour.

9:00 AM - Begin client projects and commission work for the day.

1:00 PM - Lunch and walk.

2:00 PM - Back to client projects, send update emails to clients for the day.

3:30 PM - Paint watercolor originals for sale and marketing

5:30 PM - Stop work for the day, start dinner, husband comes home.

6:30 PM - Eat dinner with wonderful husband, do dishes, then watch some StarTrek or BSG together.

8:30 PM - Check art forums and this forum. Do a bit more work if I feel like it. Read a book.

Midnight - Bedtime.
