I always fail at self-discipline. I heard about the system where you can reward yourself for being disciplined which sounded great to me. But when i tried I miserably failed. For example, Ill be disciplined for a whole week following my routine and when I reach the point where I have to reward myself for being good all week I spoil evrything again.Ill explain, instead of rewarding myself for lets say 2 hours of TV Ill go on watching it for 2 days straight. You see because I dont have discipline I cannot even reward myself properly because I over-indulge in things I reward myself with, it can be anything, surfing Internet, watching movies, playing videogames, reading a book and so on. I think it is also because I have very addidctive personality, if I start something that I like I immerse myself in it so much that nothing else matters and I keep doing this for days and days and because I dont have discipline to stop me it can last for weeks until a breakdown. Thats where i finally stop when i realize that I want to improve my life and achieve my goals, when this realization comes I usually suffer for a couple of days and then return back to my goals for a week or two until I fail again. So i guess my life has been this vicious loop, I cant seem to get out. The combination of addictive personality and lack of discipline ruins my life, I cannot achieve anything. Can you please help me? maybe there is other technique that I could use? Thanks a lot in advance guys. |

You need to get other people involved so that they help keep you accountable. Maybe even pay for a coach since if you know that you paid money, you want to get your money's worth. This is why some people do not hesitate to pay for expensive coaching or programs. When they know that they have already invested good money, it becomes an extra incentive to get on the ball so the money doesn't go to a waste. You may also need to get away to another location where you don't have easy access to all of your games, TV, etc. A library is where I go to get away from the computer and TV. This is another area where perhaps other people can help you with - let them keep the games for awhile! |

In addition to the great "accountability" tip Clint gave, here's the advice I have for you: Realize that successful people may not always enjoy doing some of the things they have to do (to be successful), but it doesn't matter because they've turned these actions into habits. In the 3rd habit of highly effective people, Stephen Covey points out that, "The successful person has the habit of doing the things failures don't like to do." It doesn't mean they enjoy doing these things; it means that they've turned them into habits. I understand that discipline would be required at the start to help form the habits (which take 30-90 days), but that's where Clint's suggestion of having people to keep you accountable would come in. Bob Proctor one time pointed out a fabulous definition for discipline, stating that it's "something that's consciously chosen, ardently desired, and patiently persisted in." Therefore, it's vitally important that you have such a burning desire behind the goal that you're working toward (so that you're always inspired to ultimately achieve it) so that even if you don't enjoy taking some of the action steps that are required in order for you to achieve your goal, your desire to have your goal come true will be the driving force which perpetuates you forward to take the right action for your goal(s). |
