It's a myth. We have "mapped out" what the brain in certain areas is used for (see something like this: http://hiddentalents.org/brain/jpg/b-left.jpg). I had to learn that stuff for premed. There's still lots of mysteries in neuroscience, but on a more subtle level really. If people are hooked up to fMRI etc we can see the activity of various areas of the brain and it's all used except in rare cases of extreme damage...etc etc. |

We only use a limited amount of our brains in order to make life challenging. The more in the dark we are the more challenges we will have to overcome. We earn our happiness, wisdom and esteem through these trials. The majority of the brains potential is cloaked from our consciousness. But there is a way to tap into these nether regions of the mind. The areas that are off limits. Here is how: Step 1 - buy some mimosa hostilis root bark Step 2 - extract the dmt from the bark Step 3 - inhale..........., hold...................., exhale. Now you are trailblazing through your own mind, riding a lightning storm of your own neurochemistry, discovering that you are not only genius-like in nature, but that you are god-like in nature. These minds/brains start by being cloaked as part of this divine game. But with DMT you remove this cloak and are able to BE the rest of you. |

As for OP yes it is a myth. It's on snopes.com and the real.. if you want to check it out. We use all of our brain functions just at different levels at different times. If you study neurology you'll find that the brain specifically shuts parts off when doing certain activities. Selective attention if you would. It's both a waste of calories and energy to activate for example, areas of speech if you were jumping or doing physical activity. | |

I also studied neurology and anatomy of the brain. Mostly there a lot of parts of the brain that science doesn't know what are meant for. But as many pointed out in the topic - we don't have to use it 100% at all time, only what is needed for the situation. Consider this example: you don't have to be running in order to eat with your hands or jumping while writing.

I think the best anybody can say is that we have no idea how much of our brains we use. Sure a MRI can show us what parts of our brains are working, but how do we measure from there? There's still a ton of secrets to the brain, and the useful way to look at the idea of only using part of your brain is more of an indicator that certain parts are neglected, rather than unused. |

True and false. I think the original science is questionable. If all our neurons were firing at once there would be no actual sense to it. On the other hand, I do believe we have a huge amount of untapped potential. Hypnosis, among other things, shows us that.
