I'm graduating from college soon and do not plan on working full time. I hope on getting a permanent part time job for steady income. What should I tell interviewers the reason for why I want part time and not full time work? I'm thinking about telling them I have family matters to take care of, but would that seem like a burden and hinder my chances of getting hired? Anyone have experience with a permanent part time career? |

If the position you're applying for is a part time position - I don't see that any employers would have an issue with you saying: "I'm very busy with other things (family, whatever, whatever) - and a part time position is what fits in with my schedule." |

What is the real reason tht you are only after p/t work? I personally wouldn't use the family excuse, because it could make an employer wonder how often you would use that excuse not to show up to work. They probably wouldn't be caught dead admitting it, but it would be crossing their mind at the very least. If you are needing the extra time to pursue other things like a hobby, i don't see the harm in mentioning it if asked, especially if it is interesting or quirky. It could be a good topic for conversation and help you build rapport and showcase your personable side. Good luck. |

It makes no sense for you to even go after full time positions so I agree with others that if you go only after part time positions, you will not have to justify yourself for wanting only a part time job. If the interviewer asks you just out of curiousity, you can most certainly refer to family reasons or any other commitment that takes your time. After all, many moms use the family issue for wanting only part time work and it is totally understandable.
