Default Spontaneous Motivation

Any of you ever get that phenomenon where, right around your bedtime, you come up with some new idea and are suddenly 100% ready to just down a big mug of coffee and get to work on it, all night long being a real possibility? It's 11:30pm here and I need to be up at 5 tomorrow morning, but seriously don't think I can sleep right now because I'm ready to start working at my new idea.

What's the consensus here as to the best option? Trying and force myself to sleep and conjure up the same level of focus for this tomorrow, or just get to it and damn the possible lack of sleep consequences? I have a big break in the afternoon during which I could nap awhile if needed, but sometimes I have trouble going to sleep in the middle of the day.

I'm a first time poster who's been lurking here for awhile, and am the type of person who's either 100% focused and working, or 100% apathetic, I've never been good at in-betweens

Edit: Just noticed I misspelled "spontaneous", and it's bothering me that I can't edit my thread title. :P

What I do is jot down the elements of that new idea... it only takes a few minutes... then... I forget about it... knowing that the next day I will be able to fill in the details and bring the "wonderful" idea to fruition... Works for me...

Good idea, I've actually already done that I really had the idea for this a little while back and did some work on it, then kind of put it on the backburner until tonight when talking to my girlfriend (I was actually complaining to her about feeling very un-focused and lacking direction)... The idea came rushing back and it was like I saw it in my head at it's completion, what it would look like in working order and have felt like a kid at Xmas eve since then. I've been brainstorming and working a little more on it now while also checking the message boards here.

Well... now it's time for you to hit the sack... think about your girlfriend and forget the project...

Tomorrow is another day... and... you'll be on your way...

Best of luck to you and to your project...

Thanks! I'm so awake at the moment I'm not sure if I'd even sleep yet, but am going to try soon as I'd like to get in 4.5/4 hrs of sleep tonight! I've been working at switching to a bi-phasic sleep schedule as it feels really natural to me when I stick to it correctly, it's just disciplining myself to always get in the nap that's hard. I really don't like to sleep much, unless I'm either feeling depressed or just finally hitting a wall from my usual horrible sleeping habits.

Thumbs up

Shamou's right!

It's always better to jot down your ideas in point form first, if you really can't seem to do or focus on anything else or even too excited to sleep, but think about your brainwave!

Spontaneous motivation is the beauty of the human mind revealed! It's not really spontaneous per se, but it's been brewing in your sub-conscious mind. And because you or someone said something, it triggered off your brain cells and waves and that set your sub-conscious to come forth and spew out the brewing idea!

It happens to me as well... and I also had the unfortunate example of telling myself to note it down later, which I of course forgot what it was later...

Work out your own system for recording such explosions of ideas, perhaps keep a notepad and pen just beside your bed for those spontaneous moments, or maybe a voice recorder or something like that. Doing so will allow you to review your thots at a later time and perhaps even allow your mind to further brew your ideas to maturity!

Try it, and share more on other ways that you may try!
