Default Risk Taking

Do you regularly indulge in activity that involves risk taking?

I think I've come to realise that it's possible I may prioritise "certainty" too much in my life, instead of rolling with certainty,

and I've been told on here, from forum people that I seem uncertain all the time in my way of communicating.

So maybe adventurous risk taking behavior would be a good idea. Been thinking about 'teenager'ism a bit too..

What do you think?

I think it's always good to go out of your comfort zone a bit since that's how we grow. However, risk can be controlled in a way.

For example, I snow ski and scuba dive. There is some risk involved in these activities but I control it using good technique I learned from professional instruction.

So there's no need to take on risk in a hazardous way. But overall, the rewards you get from a bit of risk are always higher than if you were to stay totally conservative.

I used to have this habit of telling important people at work their ideas were stupid in front of lots of people

I'm a bit more tactful these days :-)

(Though oddly I generally got praise for doing this)

Funny thing with risk taking is that the you get a rush from doing something with a high perceived risk which is often totally out of whack with the actual risk

For instance

Scary and risky:
- Base jumping
- Downhill mountain biking
- Driving a car at 150mph

Any of these can easily lead to injury / death if you don't know what you're doing or you just get unlucky

Scary but not actually risky (no physical injuries!):
- Walking up to strangers and talking to them
- Quitting a job (short-term money shortage < long term injury)
- Acting like a total clown in public (note: clown as in entertainer, not dickhead)

If you stick to activities that belong in the 'scary but not actually risky' category, then I think you could really push the envelope, get a huge buzz but not have to worry about getting properly hurt.

I believe there's risk in everything we do. In the book, "Young Millionaires," every one in that book's a millionaire and every action they take always has a level of risk involved. Their success rides on risk-taking! However, they didn't consider themselves to be taking risks.

The bigger the risk, the higher reward there will be. There's calculated risk where you everything possible to ensure that you won't fail, but sometimes you will fail, and failing is a natural part of winning.

I think it's important to remember what Bob Proctor one time said in that, "If you aren't willing to take the risk, you don't deserve the reward."

I agree with the earlier post. It is good to get out of your comfort zone, and risk-taking brings that challenge.

I think to truly know who we really are, in life we should take risks. Why? because you are putting yourself in a situation where you don't know the outcome.

Sure you can fail but you should know that before going in. But what if you succeed. The greatest reward is pushing ourselves to the limit.

That is true growth.
