Are these final marks?

In general, you need to be proactive when you feel you are really flailing in a subject - seek out help from the professor or teaching assistant early on, and continue until you feel you have a hold on it.

Now, if it is the end of the term, all you can do is retake it. A different teacher might make a big difference. If your school has a rating system for courses or faculty, you might want to check potential classes to see how they are rated, if a particular professor has comments like "never explains anything" - well, select a different course!

On the other hand, not everyone has an aptitude for every subject or course. You probably have some intuition telling you that the problem resided more with your interest and aptitude, or more with your teacher. Pay attention to that, as well, and consider a change in major if needed.

I work at a university and hire many engineering students as student workers in my department. I've often seen students who come in as one engineering major, who find out 1 year or so in that they have more interest in or are better suited to a different engineering major (for example mechanical engineering -> computer engineering, computer engineering -> industrial and systems engineering, aerospace engineering -> civil engineering).

If you have a system at your school where there is an academic advisor you can talk to, that might be helpful in sorting out your options.

As a parent, I'd much rather see my son or daughter take a few wrong turns in finding the right match for major than see them frustrated and unhappy for 4 years and then unmotivated to find a job in a field they really don't like. But in taking this to your parents, it would be good to be able to present them with your plan to retake the course, shift majors, or whatever seems right to you.

Good luck! it might feel like the end of the world right now, but years from now, you will likely see this as a learning experience.

Just be honest and show them

They'll find out sooner or later. Sooner the better, otherwise they'll get upset that you tried to hide it from them

They'll get over it
