I think I have probably heard this phrase more than any other from various employer from various occupation types. The last time occurred a week ago, just before I went to visit my parents for the long weekend. How would you guys react if someone told you that, and would it cause you to rethink your career path, or motivate you to prove them wrong?

Depends on who they are. If they are experts in that particular field, I may listen but I would want more clarification to understand what my weaknesses are so I could determine whether or not it's feasible to work on improving them. But if it's just other people's opinion and they don't really know what's involved in the field, I wouldn't put much credibility on what they are saying. For example, if you think you want to be a hockey player and Wayne Gretzky watches you on the ice and tells you that you are suited for hockey, you might want to take his opinion seriously. And ask for clarification. But if it's just your relatives telling you that and they don't know hockey from a board game, then their opinion would certainly not hold as much water as Wayne Gretzky's. |

It would motivate me to prove them wrong because I'm stubborn like that. I've had a few instances where teachers have had low expectations of me which they have communicated to me... they ate their words. Don't let anybody get in the way of your dreams. Ever. |

I'd smile, act passive aggressive, leave, apply for a job with a competitor, and then make damn sure that the original firm knew that I was working with the competitor because that's the kind of cut-your-nose-off-to-spite-your-face sod that I am |

I agree that you should consider the source. If it's an employer you'd really like to work for, then it might be a good idea to ask why they won't consider you. This is sometimes a polite excuse to say that they are not willing to pay you your worth. I had a 2nd interview a few months ago, for a company that seemed awesome and that I felt I was the right person for. The CEO asked for my Star sign, turned around and told my agency I was unprofessional...2 days later,I was hired by a huge corporation that has a reputation for hiring top talent. Believe me, they wouldn't hire an unprofessional person. Good luck on your job search.Do not get discouraged by what people say. It's what people pay you that matters. Appreciation is wonderful, but a paycheck is the true indicator of how valuable you are to your employer. |

| I was gonna say! Who hires based on star signs? That's silly, really silly. Good thing you didn't up working for a company that bases their hiring decisions on some prehistoric hokey-pokey :S

It was said to me by my manager at the time. She thought I was crap because I wouldn't place the apples in a triangle shape like she wanted them (organic wholesale store). I reasoned that if I put them in a triangle the apples tend to fall and bruise, having witnessed this myself. Other staff agreed that it was an obvious stupid thing to do, but she insisted it was the best way for them to look proffesional. She then proceeded to tell me I am not suited for this type of job...to which I agreed wholeheartedly. I am suited to work in a place where people have common sense and listen to me when I speak sense to them to save the company money. If someone says this to you, they are probably right...you can do much much better! Last edited by elucidate; 09-09-2011 at 06:16 AM. |
