Default Improving organisation and self discipline

I really am not very well organised, and I think if I manage myself and my time more effectively then I'll have more hours a day for work, so more money and more play, so more fun.

Does anyone know any good books on the subject?

Read any of Brian Tracy's books as he gets into time management quite a bit. One title is called Million Dollar Habits which is a great read.

Covey's 7 Habits for Highly Effective People handles this topic well. That's one book I heard a lot of good things about so I kinda wanted it to be ineffective, but I admit it was really good. I'd recommend it without hesitation.

Agreed, Matt. I'm actually in the process of reading it again. What I like is that Covey teaches you not only how to be more effective, but how to be more effective at the things in your life that really matter.

These are really two subjects:
1. Organization: You need to choose a system or systems to organize how you work. It should organize what you do and when. Good examples are: Get Things Done, 4 Hour Work Week.
2. Self Discipline: The harder part is actually sticking to your system(s). For this reason you should read just one book and work with that for a while e.g. 1 week or 2 weeks to test how well you do with it. Don't try to incorporate many systems at once.

Also be aware that your self discipline is only as good as your 'state of mind'. You can study to improve your state of mind, but a huge part of it comes down to your biology (how good are your nutrition, sleep and exercise habits). So you may want to look at that if you have trouble.

Most people get stuck on self discipline - so if things aren't working try trouble shooting it with honest self analysis - why didn't I stick to the system today? What distracted to me? What kind of state of mind was in? How can I fix that?
