Hello, I have soon coming to the point where I have to decide on my career path. I am soon graduating from my hospitality university and I do not know what path to take. In one hand I have my fathers business, which i think I would really enjoy but I cannot be for certain till I actually work. Plus my father’s knowledge in the field is indispensible and I know I would be successful. The problem here is that I would be continuously interacting with my father, who also would be my boss. My father is an amazing person but a difficult person and even more so probably as a boss. Difficult in the sense that when you could have done something better, he will beat you to knees (plus he has high blood pressure). Perhaps that is good since I will be more diligent in the future. I will be also moving quite often since it is a project based business around the world, so I would move every 2 years. I would like to be stable though. The main reason I am contemplating not to go with my father is because I think I will not feel 100% free and that I will not grow/be independent, etc. Or I work in city I choose, being independent. I don’t really know what job I would do but I have a few ideas. I feel like im choosing between my social and career life. (I am 21) What would you guys advice? Is independence from your parents important? How will I be able to decide? Last edited by Jazzer; 06-08-2011 at 07:37 PM. |

I was in a similar position at your age. I decided to work for my father. It lasted a year and it was okay but by the end of the year I new I had to try something else. You are young, go with your gut, don't worry about it too much and if it doesn't work out just try something else. Its not the end of the world either way so just go for it!! |

These days, it's quite normal for people to go through a few very different careers during their working years. Quite often, you just won't know how a certain career path will turn out until you try it. If you are faced with different choices, just list the positives and negatives of each choice and go with your gut feeling on which one would be better for you now. You never really know until you try and things can certainly change in the future. So experience would be your best teacher here. Try the best option for now and gain from the experience. The experience will open up other roads for you should you wish to take them. It's quite normal for people in your age group not to know what career to take. Just try a few things out and things will be more clear once you are in the working world. |
