French pronunciations are still little bit of a problem. I use this service when I am in doubt.

OMG! I really am going to have the world's largest collect of French resources at this rate! Thanks Coccinnelle!

Cachy: I agree. The pronunciations can be difficult! Thx.

Coccinnelle, that is an amazing collection. It will take me at least few weeks to go through that. Thank you so much.

That deserves like 10 reps.

I saw you have a lot of recommendations from people over here, but I just had to share the site I'm using for learning french. It teaches you to lisetn to french, learn about the culture, learn the grammar and basically it encompases everything one should learn in a language course in my opinion:

Open Learning Initiative

add french 1, and later on you can add french 2 as well.

Hehehe, last week I started studying French again (I've been studying it intermittently over the past 10 years), so I decided to do a forums search for language-learning threads. Boy, did I ever hit the jackpot with this one! Thanks to everyone who posted links.

Downloading french versions of SNES roms is a good idea! Typically, the reading level isn't that high in older games and I'd be motivated to play.

I'm not sure how fun playing a game on a laptop could be though. I'll actually have to hook up my computer, I suppose.

I'm glad i came across this thread. I've been stuck at beginner for years, just picking up language cd's now and then. This has renewed my interest!

Zephy: Yeah, using games as a language-learning tool was an idea I got from Agota's games thread, actually.

Another novel approach I'm experimenting with this time around is to throw out my perfectionist tendencies and actually set a goal of becoming someone who speaks French badly. (In terms of grammar and vocabulary, that is. I don't mean pronunciation.) I usually get so caught up in wanting to become good at a language, that I end up feeling discouraged if/when I fail to live up to my expectations soon enough, and give up.

I'd rather be someone who speaks bad French than someone who doesn't speak it all, so I decided to set more modest goals for myself this time, and see how that affects my attitude. I've been pleased with the results so far. When I catch myself worrying that I'm not progressing fast enough, I just remind myself what my goal is, and then I don't feel bad anymore because I'm accomplishing it.

Thanks, aelle.

Another thing I'm doing this time around (thanks to all the progress I've made with persoinal development ) is being more assertive about what I desire when it comes to language exchanges. I've done language exchanges numerous times in the past, but they rarely satisfied me. Making small talk about how my day went bores me to tears in French as much as it does in English.

So I've decided to be more creative and assertive. This time around, when I contact potential pen-pals on Polyglot (my language exchange website of choice), I'm letting them know right off the bat that I'm looking for someone with whom I can experiment with creative methods, like role-playing and collaborative storytelling. I'm also specifying that I'm looking for someone who has the time to write several short messages every week, as opposed to one long message on the weekend. (Which has been a problem in the past, because I really need to be doing a little French every day.)

So, thanks to everyone on this forum who helped me become more assertive and creative this year.

Hi,

I have Rosetta Stone V3. I bought it years ago. But I just wish to use it to learn French. I just gave it a try a few days ago. It seems to be really cool. Have you got it, too?
