Isaac Asimov wrote a short story back in 1957 called The Feeling of Power about this very thing.

Interesting. I sometimes do the math in my head or at least on paper just to use my brain.
I do have a son, and I worry about what kind of education I'll be providing for him. I want him to be able to think for himself. And I don't mean just math... Losing the ability to think critically is even worse.

I do the math for balancing my checkbook in my head. I know it's just simple addition/subtraction, but if I need a calculator for that, there is definitely something wrong.
