There is a book entitled "Goals!" which I read some years ago. I just blogged about it. You may wish to check it out.

Ok here is what I do. I am going to do this from my perspective here, which is leaning towards a Darkworker outlook so sorry if your not inclined that way. Lets take the goal of going to the gym more/visiting my karate calsses more frequently. This is a real goal of mine I am in the process of implementing right now! The trick here is...I hate my body. Yes. I look in the mirror and I see and overweight, unhealthy body, inside I see my true self, I see the beauty just a like a sculptor sees the beauty in a lump of stone, in my lump of a body I see the beauty of myself. The real me. The God-me. I know I can never achieve my goals, no matter how focussed I am, unless I am totally healthy in body. Thats what drives me. I know that I must be healthy. Its not acceptable to be anything less than totally healthy. What I do is, I find leverage in myself. I find what I don't want to accept. Then I make myself feel bad about it enough to inspire action, then I forget the guilt and just work on cultivating the buring desire to get what I want. |

Adistar, I found a burning reason. Something so compelling that I must achieve my goal no matter what it takes. This reason is the one that naturally wake me up and keep me sober even into the wee hours of the night. The goal plan, tracking, reminder and other tools are secondary items that I use to help make the process much more organised, that's all. Without a burning desire, the tools are basically useless because you will easily lose the motivation to carry on. |

Passion. I do not set goals that do not appeal to me. I know the big, hip thing now is to go to the gym more - but I don't want to, and therefore don't make it my goal. Look back at your goals - why did you set them? Are they just the run-of-the-mill goals everyone else has? Or were they goals you really wanted to achieve, but have taken the wrong fork? |

Second, tell all your friends what your goal is... and tell them exactly when it will be achieved... that is also a tremendous source of motivation as you do not want to look like a wimp in front of your friend... so chances are you'll reach your goal... And, lastly, you must commit to a goal... a goal is not wishful thinking... it's a measure of the type of person that you are... not keeping your word to someone else is bad... but not keeping your word to yourself... is the pits... Good luck to you... and keep us posted... . | |

Sometimes there's just no tricks. You didn't mentoin what goals, how long you've been pursuing them, how you're doing towards them, etc, so I'm gonna assume you've been wanting to achieve it for a bit and perhaps not really seeing returns. Perhaps you need to increase your self-discipline. There is a wonderful series on self-discipline by Pavlina, which might help you. Remember the last part of self-discipline, persistance. Sometimes you need to persist even when you're not seeing any results, or are having a difficult time. http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/200...lf-discipline/ Keep yourself motivated and high energy. Eat right, drink enough water, excersize, have a consistant pattern of sleep, all hte standard stuff. Find other people who want to achieve this goal with you, if you can. This might help: http://www.stevepavlina.com/articles...ing-desire.htm The why is really, really important, I agree. But sometimes you just need to suck it up and just do it. |

Hi, Your goal must be something you really want. How bad you want it will determine the level of motivation you will keep until you reach it and will determine if you will persevere when you will face an obstacle. When you write down a goal, also write 10 reasons for wanting it (or benefits). If you have a hard time completing your list, chances are you will not reach your goal because, along the way, something will distract you or you will loose your motivation or you will face an obstable you will not be able to overcome. If you really want it, there is nothing that can stop you from getting it. Good Luck! René |
