Default How to keep your brain fit?

To keep it active and remain alert always. like playing some games or ways which would increase reaction speed, thinking faster, solving problems faster etc., like by maintaining a proper diet? reading books? doing maths?

Yes. Simple answer: use it. Stretch it. Do stuff you find hard but not impossible. Stretch it more.

Create stuff. Think of some ludicrous invention and try to find a way to make it work (or just dream up impossible stuff that would be cool, even if it's still not feasible to create with our level of technology).

Challenge and imagination will allow your brain and mind to expand.

This forum is a part of the puzzle for me. I don't have many chances to talk and discuss and get other peoples thoughts on things like emotional mastery, self development, philopsophy, etc. Coming here, reading peoples ideas, clickling links... All helps to stretch the mind.

On of the best ways to keep your brain fit is to keep your body fit.

Partner dancing is better than reading books when it comes to prevent dementia in old people.

Mnemonics is another great activity. It not only provides tool to remember things. It's also on of the most mentally taxing activity that I know.

In my opinion it is more vital to train with varying but specific exercises for the specific things that want to be achieved.

An attitude to go for the complicated problems and develop a "joy" for solving problems can mobilize more capability.

I think it is more a matter of a "conditioned" focus in a specific area.

Keeping your blood sugar relatively flat and eating healthy food will condition, that you have "free" energy resources, the biggest "energy killer" is your metabolism.
Eating Habits can give you a good edge, for overall and longterm capability.

Sports are also great for everything.

The obvious brain exercises like puzzles, games, memory training etc all help with brain fitness.
Learning a new language or musical instrument as well.
There's certainly a case for "use it or lose it.
Tasks that involve mental processes that your brain has never done before are beneficial - a simple yet very effective idea is to learn to do things with the opposite hand with hand-eye co-ordination activities such as writing, texting, even golf or tennis.
Physical exercise benefits the brain. Research in the elderly has shown that those engaging in regular walking had better memory skills compared to those living a sedentary lifestyle.

Keep learning and keep thinking.

Read books that stretch you and try to think about the authors point of view, develop your own conclusions.

Another way is studying, look for adult education classes you can join.

As already said, physical exercise is important to help maintain a clear mind.

Learning to play a musical instrument is a great way to exersise. If you want to exercise your body too try fencing, it's a little tiring in the beginning but after you start actual games it works body and mind in a great way.

Personally, I read books and play room escape games.
I'm in university too, but if I actually study my brain goes, like, "whew" and I may start have memory trouble

I am preparing for an exam and I was recently reading "The Einstein Factor" a book that promises to increase intelligence. The author recommends an exercise called image streaming: you sit quietly with your eyes closed and describe out loud the images that you see in your head.

I would recommend that you find an exercise that is closer to your personality. If you like mathematics, try everything that involves numbers and equations. If you like letters, try learning or writing poems or learn a language. If you are a social person, try to do this with a friend, it can be a very fun activity

I play Strimko. It's an online game that has some similarity to Sudoku but has a bit of a twist to it.

And I play Sudoku when I'm not online.

Keep up your fascination with the world...always explore....

That's the answer right there. Look at what you feed your body and that's what feeds your brain. If you feed yourself crap, then your brain is going to be crap, and for your brain to be healthy, your body needs to be healthy.

I've got friend who do Sudoku all the time and they're like, "yeah, I'm stretching my brain by doing these puzzles," and they'll say that while guzzling down a burger from McDonalds and drinking a two liter bottle of soda. It's ridiculous.

But one the one thing people might not think of is social interaction that one thing that keep the brain active and motivated.

Brain Training on the Nintendo DS

But seriously, in order to keep your brain fit, you need to exercise both sides of the brain.

Learn new things, say a new language. And don't stop even after you supposedly master it - periodically read books in that language, or try journal writing.
