Default Discipline

I admit it. I'm so utterly utterly crap at disciplining myself.

I want to meditate regularly. I really want to. I used to. It did me so much good. But I don't meditate. And I don't know why I don't.

Substitute the word 'meditate' for a whole host of other stuff.

How do you discipline yourself?

Discipline is tough for me as well.

For me, things that take discipline offer the suggestion of a possible benefit in the long term.

But, the lure of feeling good 'in the moment' tends to undermine discipline.

I always run into the idea that I should do what feels good in the moment, because this moment is all we have, right? Sure, maybe doing something difficult might make me feel great an hour, or a day or a month or a year from now, but that's not promised is it?

And it's that kind of thinking that destroys my discipline.

The only way I've found to fight this so far is to ask and answer the question 'what's the point?', when I feel like not doing something that takes discipline. I try and come up with enough answers to that question to motivate me and get me moving.

"What's the point of working out?" "Well you may be sore for a while and it might be annoying to get moving, but you'll develop a routine, get healthier, have a better body, have more energy, sleep better, etc"... I just keep trying to list off the 'points' until I talk myself into doing something like that, instead of plopping down on the couch and watching tv.
