I mostly go off of recommendations, but lately I've been low on recommendations. So my questions are How do you choose which book you're going to read next? How do you choose the type i.e. personal development, fiction, etc. |

Local library is a huge one for me. Sometimes I just go browsing, other times I look up authors or books I've heard about and look for similar books by the same or other authors online. Sometimes I browse around Chapters to see if anything's interesting. I'm fairly plugged in, so I sometimes get book recommendations from blogs, sites, podcasts, vidcasts and so on. Sometimes I get recommendations from books, or by reading the bibliography at the end of books. At amazon, once you've found something you find interesting, look around its page because it usually has a listing for "similar" stuff. I read books on a variety of subjects. I've just recently started reading "PD" books like from Tony Robbins and Brian Tracy and so on. I rarely read any fiction, mostly non-fiction. I'm learning to photoread so I'm starting to get through the stuff faster, too. There's been a coupla threads online here about people recommending books, some really good ones there. I also feed into a enough blogs and stuff that i pick up stuff all time - as for what to read, I have pile of books on 'queue' but sometimes, like food, i get certain cravings - for a good fiction book, or history. | |

I'm a GTDer, so whenever I hear about a new book in wahtever way, I instantly write it down somewhere. My Someday/Maybe - Books list is somewhere in the hundreds just in the last few months. They just accumalated over time. Point is, perhaps you need a new way of organizing recommendations rather than new sources per se?

Actually, my experience is quite different when it comes to choosing books to read. I have read probably close to 100+ books on self-help, hypnosis, subconscious mind, psychology and so on. But maybe only 5% of these books, I actually went out looking for. Every other book came to me by accident or you can say I was sort of directed to them. E.g. I used to read a lot of bodybuilding books especially about and by Arnold Schwarzenegger and that's where I learned about self development, and once in the bodybuilding section, I found a book on hypnosis, and then got reading those books, then just happened to find a book by Anthony Robbins and so on. A lot of the times I just get an urge to go to Chapters or Indigo bookstore and once I go there, there's usually an awesome book on sale about a topic that I have been reading about. Intention - Manifestation. I actually just started thinking about all this after reading this post and I can't help but be amazed by this whole process. But the best place to probably start is this: PsiTek - FREE Metaphysical Books They have tons of great and classic books online for free. Again, I got this web site by pure chance. :-) I have also read quite a few biographies which I find really motivating. Another good place to get free books is: Main Page - Gutenberg Besides that, you might want to read the books that are written by the people who're in the movie "The Secret". No book collection is complete without "Think and grow rich" which can actually be found on the first site I mentioned above. Enjoy. |

Star... I concur with what the others have posted. Friends have guided me to recommendations or I stumble on some by cruising Amazon. I have a small list on my site that might give you some ideas as well.
