Default Best ways to get rid of junk mail

I pretty much abhor everything about junk mail. The non-targeted nature of the advertising, the environmental waste, the time it takes to manage, blah blah blah. What are the best and most efficient ways to eliminate junk mail?

I have heard that if you send $1 to this list (you can do a google search like stop junk mail) then you'll receive less paper junk mail. I've not actually done it myself though. But I agree, junk mail is a mess. Namely, because it's junk.
