I plan on quitting my job tomorrow..and I'm freaking out. I've been planning this for as long as I've had the job. So stupid to take a job you didn't want in the first place, right? But the job has served its purpose. Apparently, being in the opposite situation of what you really want in life will make what you really want a lot clearer. Silly me, I thought by just defining my purpose in life I would magically have the chutzpah to do what needs to be done right away. Not so true for me. I still have to grow a pair. There are plenty of things that scare the crap out of me and don't seem to scare others so much, and vice versa. The public speaking stuff seems so much easier than the confrontation of telling someone I'm leaving. Then..the disappointed faces ugh. I hate feeling like a disappointment. I created the dilemma for myself so that I could be stronger about this. I signed up for CGW. Then got the hotel and trip stuff planned and paid for. It's quite a bit of money. I did everything but ask for the time off. I did that on purpose. I have plenty of vacation time, I just wanted to create an either/or situation so that I would have to choose between going to CGW with a blank canvas or keeping my job and losing a huge experience in the direction of my purpose. Now I just have to follow through. I'm going to do some work on the feeling. Writing all that out makes it feel a little better. If you want to pitch in with some support, I'd really appreciate it. |

| Thanks! Yeah, there's things I have in mind, but my overall plan is to just go down my list of ideas. Part of the plan is to get a part time job at a place where I would gladly volunteer (if it weren't a job). That'll keep me afloat.

You won't regret it I can promise you that. But what you may regret is sitting on your ass watching your savings disappear. So I urge you not to become lazy thinking you're on vacation or something. Trust me I know how that goes. I did it for 10 months. What a waste. Your new job is now to focus on your goals and ambitions and fight through the frustrations. Right now you are working on you, be cautious not to get sidetracked.

At the edge of a major decision, it's normal to feel nervous. It may be quitting a job now, but it could be other things, like buying a house or even going for a long holiday next time. As long as you've considered it to your satisfaction, the decision has already been made. Now, it's just about mustering up the courage to do it. And I think you have that courage, and I will support you to go ahead. This is also an exercise in courage. What lies in the future? No one can guarantee you anything. Others might relate their experience, and while there is wisdom in these, it is still their experience that happened one time. Yours may be different. (This also explains why you get opposite advice from different people.) But what you can be confident about is that you are making the best possible decision at this point of time. And if you continue to do that - make good decisions from your point of view - on a regular basis, you have very good odds that you will have a hugely successful life. Think of yourself when you made a decision at some point in the life in the past, maybe deciding which school to go to or whether to drink alcohol. Imagine your present self being able to counsel that past self. What would you say to that person? Now imagine your future self .. imagine you have to ask your future self about your present situation. What would she reply? |

Thank you, ColinH! I read your post a little right before I gave my two weeks and it really put things in perspective, I appreciate that very much! I did it!!! Yay!! I was freaking out. Man, I've never freaked out that bad before, I thought I was going to faint. I've never fainted! I got a bad headache, too and I hardly ever get headaches. After a little nap at lunch time in the sun, I felt better. My bosses were very understanding. I told them of my plans to work for myself and travel the world. They were so supportive! They don't want me to go, of course, but they're happy for me. They even gave me a pep talk about my plans. I can't believe I went through with it. (In a good way.) I'm extremely grateful to you all for the nice words. THANK YOU ALL! |

Hey, Quitting your job seems like the hardest thing in the world before you do it. Then as the words come out and the following minutes and hours afterwards make it seem like it's the easiest thing in the world. Especially if it's right for you, which by the sound of your post, it seems to be. I guarenteed you will be elated afterwards and will feel like a piece of the jigsaw puzzle which is your life has just lotted neatly in to place! Good luck! |
