Question If you had to choose one...

If you had to choose one person who had the most impact on your personal development who would it be?

I'll start - Stephen Covey (author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People")

Covey's writing helped me to take my life in a new direction.

I think the person that has the most impact on your PD is the person that decided they want to improve themselves and focus on PD......

ie: You, or me in this case.

Im still very new to the whole PD scene, I started simply by typing 'success' in Google. It took me a day or two to eventually come to StevePavlina.com

@ Adam and Trina

You're such a cute couple.

EDIT: And on-topic, for me, probably the biggest influence has been Steve's works.

Haha, thanks. LOL. I actually would have said Adam, but I think all of the damage that my mother did to me (not all intentional) when I was growing up has had the most profound impact on who I am and why I even care about my own personal development at all. Adam has been an amazing influence in my life though, so he does deserve some credit.

Steve Pavlina (surprised there aren't more of these, actually).

I'd read a number of Personal Development books, but it wasn't until I found this site that I actually started making progress (30 day trial = genius!). Since I found this site I've lost 37lbs, almostly entirely given up meat, become a (comparatively ) early riser, joined Toastmasters and have begun looking for my purpose (haven't found it yet ) as well as generally feeling a lot more competent and determined in life.

I'm still working on it (I'm currently on a 30-day trial to minimise forum usage! ) but the improvement over the past 6-12 months has been astounding and I credit Steve as the impetus for that...

Oh my, that reprogramming [fnord] was only supposed to last for 23 years. You must have gotten the edited [fnord] version that didn't have the proper safeguards. [fnord]

Default What a shame!

After reading the first answer (Stephen Covey), I automatically changed the question in my mind to "If you had to choose one PD writer...". I stand corrected. Now that I payed attention, I would have to say... my parents. Yes, I know they are two persons, but dad wins my proactive/optimistic award, and mom wins the most organized and punctual one.

My first ever PD book was Selling for Dummies by Tom Hopkins which I bought a week before I went into sales. I couldnt believe the amount of guys in sales who have never ever read any PD Books! It set me up big time and was promoted to sales Manger, the fastest ever in my old company's history (3 months after training) then soaring to top Scottish Sales Manager within another year and 2nd in the UK! This book is simple and effective.

Next came Frank Bettger, 'How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling'. This and his follow up book are gems for salespeople. Often when you are in sales and especially if working with other sales guys, there bad habits rub off on you. Bettger gets you back to basics and reminds you of what you are really doing. A timeless classic. I wish I could shake this guys hand.

Then came book after book all with a positive message but one that sticks out is Napolean Hill and W Clement Stone, 'Success through a Positive Mental Attitude'. Hats off to these guys. they faced the same and worse problems we face everyday, but just DO IT NOW!

I have to echo others here and say my boyfriend. I can read like a madwoman and never act on anything that particularly challenges me. But my boyfriend has single-handedly helped me challenge some of my most deep-set and self-defeating beliefs. The great thing is that, with those roadblocks taken care of, I have the tools to continue my personal development using Web sites like these and motivational speakers like those listed. I have no idea what I would be doing today if it wasn't for him. I wonder sometimes how long it would have taken me to break those beliefs systems -- in fact, if I ever would have at all.

Dale Carnegie started it all for me.

The person who had the most impact is undoubtedly Tony Robbins. Then Brian Tracy's stuff.

I love Pavlina's stuff, it's just that I generally am exactly of the same opinion (except for the more spiritual stuff to which I have become more open-minded thanks to him).
