Imagine that you are in the middle of talking to the perfect woman for you and you are both having a great time. Everything is going well and you feel electric. You are both laughing, enjoying a nice dinner, nothing is coming in between you and her at the moment. Keep that image in your head when you think of biting your nails. Smile |

If it's just a habit, then you can release it easily and effortlessly in one half-hour session with an NLP practitioner/hypnotist. If it's got emotional cause, for instance, if it's an expression of anxiety or guilt or hurt, you can release it easily and effortlessly in one slightly longer session with an NLP practitioner/hypnotist. Your unconscious mind has a positive purpose for this behavior. If you release the behavior without addressing the underlying emotional issue, you'll just find another way, perhaps one with more dire consequences, to serve that same positive purpose. You might want to consider what positive purpose the nail biting is serving - it make take some bold looking. |

Simple, you DECIDE you are going to stop. Then, every time you catch yourself doing it, you stop yourself immediately. You gently remind yourself of your decision. Do this over and over for as long as you continue to catch yourself in the act. In time, you will stop all together. All it takes is a genuine desire and some determination to stop. You have to really want to stop! I was a nail biter as a kid. I decided it was a gross and nasty habit and my hands looked awful. This was long before I'd ever heard of anything spiritual so no sessions required...just an honest effort to stop. However, now, I probably would seek out some tools as Angela suggested since I know they exist. The point is, you can do it either way. The important part is the DECISION to stop. You can do it if you really want to! GO! |

I have an annoying habit of actually picking and biting the skin off my fingers. I think it's because of the calluses I've developed from my annoying habit of playing the guitar. I don't worry a whole lot about it (rather, it's not my #1 priority right now), although I guess it means I technically can't be a vegetarian, eh? |

Ugh, I am a nail biter. The one time I managed to stop and grow my nails to the point where they looked nice and they were long enough for me to paint with beautiful nail polishes was when I made the conscious effort to take care of them. Every night before bed I would apply Sally Hansen Grow Nails Grow, then massage in some Cuticle cream followed by a rich Hand Creme. I found that this positive act in looking after my nails really helped and they grew long and strong for the first time in over 10 years. |

My mom tried the foul-tasting nail polish on me as a kid. I remember laying on the couch feeling absolutely sick to my stomach. I still chew, but agree with the poster who talked about taking care of your hands/nails. I think this helps b/c it gives you sort of some "busywork" to do surrounding your nails and fingers.

I would say to stop cold turkey, it's the same as smoking or other addictions. Do it a little will nurrish the addiction, so the best way is to stop it foe ever and try to find a replacement for the need it was filling. I guess it could be stress, so find another way to destress, maybe chewing gum, deep breathing... Virginie |

How about starting with just one? Starting today, you can bite all your fingernails, except your right pinky. Next week you can bit all your finger nails except your right and left pinky... Make sure that you do keep them short by cutting them, otherwise the temptation might be too big... |

Yeah, I'm a nail biter too! I can sometimes focus on something else long enough to let them grow a bit but essentially I end up biting them anyway. it does release some kind of endorphine because i get really cranky when people stop me from doing it - I have friends that will whack my hands out of my mouth and it is suuupppeeerrr annoying!!! the best method of prevention is distraction and a reduction of activities that allow you to nail bite. for instance I know that I bite my nails when i'm reading, or watching movies or sometimes just when i'm waiting for something (like train/bus etc) I got addicted to that nail biting polish stuff because as foul as it is... you stop noticing it after a while - probably because it comes off on EVERYTHING including meals and cups etc so everything ends up tasting the same. I tried to focus on NOT biting one nail at a time... except when i'm watching a movie i'm not doing anything with my hands and i indescriminantly bite away. maybe the NLP thing would help.... i'll try it one day soon. Goodluck! |

I bit my nails all throughout University. I was also in a long distance relationship for 4 years which was trying at the time. I think that I just worry too much about things that are out of my control and other things that I shouldn't worry too much about, like the future. That may be my biggest problem actually because I am not too stressed about my present conditions. |
