Default Super Effectiveness

Ever since I was a pre-teen, I would practice writing with my left hand because I always wanted to be ambidextrous. I remember thinking, "I have two hands, don't I?! Why am I just using one?" All the other kids thought I was being weird of course, and of course, I beat them all up, so that's not even an issue.

Have any of you ever done something like that (i.e. trying to train yourself to write with your weak hand)? I'd like to hear about it.

About two months or so ago, I decided to change two things in my life: 1) The way that I type from QWERTY to DVORAK and 2) Writing with both my hands.

Now the typing change was a very interesting one and I did it through alot of positivity, patience, and just empowering self-talk, and now I can type about 70 WPM tops right now as I was barely maxing out to 50 WPM with QWERTY.

I'm still learning the new typing habits for DVORAK, but it's a time saver. It also helps my wrists as they have a tendency to hurt after a while.

However, number 2 was an interesting thing.

I spent about 12 or so days working on writing with my right hand (am I'm left handed) and it was a really balls-trippy experience. While I was attempting to become ambidextrous, I was unable to say the right words at the right time. For example, I think that I was riding a bus, and I was telling to my friend, "Hey, I'm on a....a....a...." and I couldn't articulate the word out. I think that this was just my brain rewiring itself, but it was an interesting experience. I was speaking words incorrectly and messing up on my sentences. Perhaps it was all part of the re-wiring experience, but when I started having mood-swings like I never had before, then I decided that it wasn't worth the possible risk.

I'm not sure if I was just that one in a million case where things start getting very trippy when attempting to become ambidextrous, but I decided that for ME, it wasn't worth it. I may or may not try again in the future, but yes.

------

Other people just don't understand the full benefits of acquiring a new skill.

I think that once you acquire a skill, you'll be on the "other side" and ask yourself, "How did I ever live without this?"

Yes me - I still can't write left handed

I'm always doing things like that though - I'm heavily dependent on my right hand and in a certain situation I always think - what would I do if I broke my right wrist and had to use my left hand?

Also, when I'm swimming front crawl, I always take my breath tilting my body and head to the right - I tried doing it to the left the other day and couldn't stop swallowing water and looked like a galumphing whale.

Yeah, that was my thought exactly.

I tried the whole left-handed thing as well, though I never really pursued it seriously. As a kid I was actually ambidextrous and was inistructed by my mother to 'pick a hand' as she was told that it was important I picked a dominant hand by our family physician.

My grandfather is also ambidextrous, so it runs in our family. I know that I could be if I bothered to devote the time to do so, but it's not high up on my list of things to do. It's just a lot of work for a what-if scenario like breaking my right hand.
