Recentelly i've been having real problems with my motvation. I can't seem to to motovate myself to do any exercise which as a sportsman is really bad, and i'm starting to get really unfit but not even that is motovating me anymore, i keep telling myself that i'm going to go to the gym but it just isn't working. I'm also right at the end of my last year of A levels and really need to revise and work towards my exams in less less than a month, but i can't seem to motovate myself to do work. It's gotten to the point where i'm really worried about my health and my future. If anyone has any advice on how to motovate myself would be greately appriciated. |

It's very possible for you to get overwhelmed if too many personal development techniques get thrown at you; and this could also fill up your mind needlessly before your a-levels. I would personally suggest that if you really can't get to the gym focus on doing something far smaller but try to do it with a positive frame of mind. Simple Things to do: 1 - If you are not in the habit of doing so; drink 1 - 2 glasses of water as soon as you read this; and see if you feel better in five minutes. Hydration increases your brains concentration level, and that will definitely help out in your exams. 2 - If you really don't want to goto the gym; replace the idea with just going for a long walk - 20/30 minutes so at least you are getting a little bit of cardio and oyxgen. Combine water, cardio and oxygen and you will always feel better If you are finding problems getting yourself to rehydrate, walk around and get fresh air, it'll be because: a) you think that these suggestions are far too simple to do any good OR b) you don't understand how these will help you do what you want OR c) your motivation levels have hit rock bottom, in which case some further advice would be good So, really it's your choice Last edited by jameskinkade; 05-19-2010 at 07:03 PM. | |

Try and get to the root of the problem. Why have you fallen into this pattern now - for most of us, this happens when we are overwhelmed or suffer anxiety over something in our lives. Often if we fear something coming - either a major change, major event (perhaps your finals??), our mind goes into defensive mode and pretty much shuts down. After a few days of feeling like this, suddenly we have created a new learned habit - the bad habits become the norm. We can't typically break out of that norm until one of two things happen: 1. We deal with the root cause - either by standing up to our fear and anxiety or getting past the event (you know how sometimes you get more energy after something you weren't looking forward to is over) -- OR -- 2. Something major happens that jolts us out of our current situation...say a health challenge, major embarassment or some other life altering event that suddenly breaks you out of your current pattern. Ideally we like to take action before number 2 comes into play...but sometimes it takes this major change to get us moving. Instead of waiting, why not try reflect on what you are anxious, unhappy, or fearful of? What is getting you down? What is making you feel somewhat out of control? Once you have the factor, then you need to reframe your response to that feeling so that it is no longer causing you to shut down. Make sense? Jeff |

Hi William, I feel you here. A few years ago I used to exercise quite regularly and I had those times where I just wasn't motivated. I think what helped me was finding things that inspired me to work out. It could be someone that I looked up to that I admired how fit they were. For you it could be anything motivational that inspires you to stay the course! |

Try going to the gym with the goal of only doing some basic exercises. Limit yourself to no more than 20- 30 minutes per session for a week or two. If you are like me you will soon find yourself adding more sets or exercises to your workout because you really want to. Getting started is half the battle.

Try having a partner whom you can go to exercise in the gym with. Someone who's really motivated to do it. Same as in studying, find a classmate who's willing to do the same schoolwork with you. These motivated people might inspire you to get moving again. Hope it helps!

Following on From what Mindset mentioned. You could consider finding someone that you trust, and would not want to let down, let them know what you would like to achieve and make yourself accountable to them. So that if you do not go through with what want you will feel as if you have let them down.
